Yes, a thread on that would be very interesting. As you know, conveyors, screeners, bulk handling kit like that is often subject to cyclic loading and impact loading. If any vulnerable details are present, or original defects, then there's always the potential for cracking, etc.

I have tagged you Michael. Yes impact loading, heavy handed digger operators, trying to unload an 8000 tonne ship inbetween tides, all means a lot of strain on a rather old structure.

Arc length is too long there or your rods are damp.
Are they OK 48?

yea, that are ok48 and I was pushing the rod pretty in there. the welds came out nice and all, just the slag wasn't behaving as expected, the fat short weld was AC and might been a little longer arch length, but slag at least came off easy.

Lincoln 7018 from Vacuum packs (IMO the only way 7018 should come).

OP: How old are you rods, have they been stored in a rod over, have you dried them in a quiver before use?

ESAB guarantee their hydrogen content on their H4R for 9 hours from the vac pak

that where brand new when welded. right from the store and used right after opening. that's why I was sure that would peel. but I had to smash just like 7016 rods. if not more cuz it was thicker slag

I'll try on a thinner material with a more rapid cool off. might make the slag popp loose more easy.

Are you running these in AC? They're DC+ rods.
Are you welding butt joints or fillets?
Tell me your parameters I've got some OK 48.00 in Vac Paks I'll do some test welds tomorrow. I can tell you I had them peeling and self releasing yesterday on mulitpass butt and self releasing easily on fillets.

I was always under the impression that vodex are rutiles with a touch of cellulosic flux in the mix too??
Well that little bit will be stored away in the ol brain bank as never know when that might come in usefull

Some 7018s are hybrids.......they have a bit of 6013 in them......the more 6013 the better the slag release

You can sometimes tell beacuse they have higher hydrogen 10mls max rather than 5mls or you can tell by the CVN temperature........the lower the temp the more low hy they are

Its a compromise between performance and properties

There are some 6013s that have a bit of low hy........Vodex is one

im sorry for the slow answer. i welded on both dc negative and dc positive just to check, but the AC was for some strange the best way to the the slag off, im thinking it might be becaus the heat input can be more limited and that the slag dont MELT in the same way. havent gotten to test it more in different joints. only the ones i showed. and some scrap later on .
