I think last time i welded some (Quite a while ago!) i used E8018s. The rod type was more to do with getting a 'colour' match as it starts to rust than anything particularly structural. A swine to weld, short arc length is the key.
WOW!! I am seriously impressed with the fish and would love to have a go at something like that. Hope you don't mind me asking but are there patterns to follow for someone like me and if so could you point me in the right direction to get them?? Very nice work...well done....

Glad you like the fish.
No there are noe patterns to follow. I use anatomical drawings to work from. I found a book called Fishes Of The Gulf of Maine by Bigelow and Somebodyorother which has the best line drawings of fishes that I have ever seen. Working from anatomical drawings is loads better then from photo's as somebody who understands fish has already done the work of setting proportions and positions of fins etc.
Google search the book title in images and you will find some of them.
I then draw it out the size I am working on and lay out the metal on top to get the curves and fins right. When drawing out the full sized version it is like drawing a cartoon, you are after the defining features not the whole thing, so you can take massive liberties with it.
Dont say 'But I cant draw' neither can I. but 6ft long on the floor with chalk is a lot easier than on paper with a pen. Keep the image topped up with chalk while you are working as it is horible to looo round and find you have wiped it out by walking about on it. These days I have a bench big enough to take one 2.5m long, luxury.
Have a go, start around say 3ft long, and take something with a simple and bold outline like a perch.
And post pics here.
