A lamp

My latest offering.

I dug this set of what I think are hoof trimming pincers out of the ground some time ago. The metal has some nice aging and shows signs of how it was worked. They were bent over when I found them, maybe that's why they got buried. Anyway, a fancy lightbulb and an old earth clamp later and we've got a weird lamp thing.

The braided cable is a real pain. I'm used to working with dirty, oily, rusty, junk and it picks up any sniff of dirt in an instant and frays without so much as a stern look.

The lightbulb is interesting, never seen them before. Are they an antique type, looking lightbulb?

If I put that on the coffee table her indoors would kill me... BUT... I can see it in one of those posh London flats and in the right outlet/arty type studio it would be silly money to buy it.

Thanks chaps! Yea, the bulb is supposed to look ye olde. In fact it was £4 delivered from China. They don't look all that good unless you can dim them to dive bar levels.

The legs of the thing are real "leggy" but I couldn't bring myself to chop it up. Plus, any attempt I've ever made that gets too close to animal/human has ended up being weighed in anyway.

looks good, I like the shadows it throws, only thing is I get the urge to put my hands over my nuts when I look at second image down from top.
Good job-I could not do it as I would not know how to make it safe.

It could be gold plated underneath but to her it's a scruffy lump of scrap.

I was serious though about the high price, It's about being discovered to have your work known, in the posh exhibit it would be standing on a plinth, called perhaps 'Light after Death' to represent a new use for a scrap tool and with a price tag of several hundreds of £'s and there are plenty of people where that amount is less than their daily pocket money.

If a bloke can weld together 20 M12 nuts into a sphere and charge £2500...well!

yeah there are some daft folk about with pockets full of money. I think 99% of selling to them involves a name / branding and the rest is just nerve enough to ask a ridiculous enough of a price. Thing is can you make yourself sound and look a total fruit cake and eat all those weird little snacks?

Gosh yes, see that brass button on the base in the first 3 pics? That's the earth, the earth wire sneaks out of the cable rope and into the earth.

Nah I am lactose intolerant and if I got a bit peckish and ate one of those funny snacks I should probably get the squits, besides I over indulge when pretty girls walk around with free shampoo so I should probably be too drunk to pitch after the first hour or so. Shame really coz you could likely knock up a load of junk to sell the fools out of my scrap bin and around the yard.
The growing a funny moustache and wearing funny / inappropriate clothes holds some appeal I must admit

Hey Johnser, I saw your lamp and thought I'd have a go at something similar. The wire I got is only 2 core. How did you run the earth. I see you mentioned something about the brass button. How does this work, do you run an earth wire from lamp holder into the brass button then back to the plug or just from the brass button to the plug.

Hey, the wire I have is 3 core. The live and neutral go all the way from plug to bulb without interruption. The third is the earth. It goes from the plug to the base plate and is attached by that brass thing. Any electrical connector would be fine but I had some old brass ones lying around that looked nice. The earth wire continues out of the brass button but goes nowhere, it's just for show, as the bulb holder is Bakelite it doesn't need to be earthed. But you could if you had a metal one.

Yep, apart from a bashing with a knot wheel, and some wax, that's as I dug it up
