You can get various sizes and colours of twin or 3 core braided cable from eBay by the metre. I'd avoid the very smallest gauge as it will be too fiddly and appear very fine. Unless you want that. It's not cheap though and a real pain compared to normal plastic cable

I love the lamp. I only started welding recently - I always thought metal had to be thoroughly cleaned before welding. Isn't that so? Or did you clean up the metal and then cleverly 'distress' it again?

That sounds cool, 16mm should look nice and sturdy, will you try to make the round spiral uniform, or more organic?

Well, everything "should" be perfectly cleaned up. But with the ugly pig iron or whatever those pincers are made of, that's nigh on impossible. I bored through the plate with oxy propane and welded the legs from the back. Cleaned things up as much as possible and used a nickel rod for welding cast. The welds went down ok and will be more than strong enough for this application but won't be structural!

Ah nice, I tried to make a double helix out of a couple of old chainsaw blades once but the pitch was all wrong! Good luck
