Not the answer, but nearly 50 years ago at primary school the teacher demonstrated air pressure and vacuums by lighting a candle stuck to the lid of a gallon oil can. He put the can over it and screwed it shut, once it burnt all the oxygen the can collapsed quite spectacularly.

Funny how you remember these lessons - that was proper schooling

Recommendations for a new air receiver

I've a fairly old but nice 3hp belt driven compressor that sits on top of a horizontal air receiver. The tank is fairly rusty on the bottom exterior and sure to be even worse on the inside. I've recently got a bit frightened than it might explode and peel open one day as there's enough evidence...

a hell of a lot more but i aint going to blow one up and take pictures unless you have a whip round and give me 20 quid for one

because i blew one up to see what pressure it would go to after a few folk were banging on about using gas bottles and oldish tanks blowing up
