Foam, Water and CO2 we keep in the workshop. The powder stays outside. It not only ruins electrics it will rot metals and materials. Nightmare to clean up.

Sand is a good one to keep around.

Sand buckets used to be supplied at petrol stations and fuel storage places.

The EU tried to ban them on the grounds they will harbour bacteria etc when damp.

Thus being a health hazard.

Just read the EU guide to disposal of old style smoke detectors, the one with a tiny amount of radioactive material.

Very few companies do refills any more as it requires the discharge of the extinguisher to check it works in accordance with manufaturer spec, ie discharge distances etc.. trouble is except for plain water ones, none of the others can be drained into the sewer system due to harmful additives. You are supposed to have some sort of waste liquid container (ie an IBC with correct bunding) that gets collected by a waste carrier to be recyled...... How is some one supposed to do that out of the back of the van?
How do I know all this? Just been on the poxy course!

As of 2019.
Water extinguishers are prohibitive of being discharged into ground water systems.
Due do the nature of some additives that may have been included in the unit.

A limited quantity of water units may be discharged into brown water systems. But it is strongly advised if this is done the contents are treated.

They never say how many or what to treat the contents with.



But foam units do bring the WC pan up a treat.

Difficult decision : being bacteriad to death or burned alive Hmmm!

Every powder should be installed with a packet of immodium next to it as ppe! You gonna need it after letting one of them off indoors.

Rally marshals have been known to use powder extinguishers to move awkward spectators.

When you explain to them that they are filled with a very effective laxative, a lungful of which will have then fill their boxers before they've got their belt loosened, there's always someone around that's heard that before and backs you up. Then it's only a matter of lifting the extinguisher and asking who's first before they move swiftly away.

The guy who does our fire training can attest to their effectiveness as as a laxative. After a previous unpleasant journey back from a training session where he got a lungful of powder he now always stands upwind & carries immodium & bog roll just in case!
