SWP have a spec for Super 6 7018s in their catalogue

they are supposed to be AC/DC and the OCV is 65v

If yours were damp you weren't giving yourself much of a chance and with Super 6, what they are supposed to do and what they actually do might be two different things. I've been through my cheap rod phase and not again. Someone gave me half a dozen Super 6 to try and those produced epic smoke.

If I remember right a 7018 is a filling rod so may be used more on DCEN as electrode negative gives slightly less penetration.

Personally would only put an open root in a butt joint with DCEN, filling and capping is almost always done DCEP

A Max 81.5v A-100a 80.1v
B-125a 77.9v B-85a 76.9v
C-110a 74.5v C-75a 73.5v

A-65a 80.6v A-50a 80.4v
B-60a 76.5v B-45a 76.1v
C-55a 74.0v C-40a 73.3v
This was done at DCEP if that makes any difference?

AC will burn 7018 if the ocv is high enough some of the old oxfords etc had dual output voltage 50 and 80v ac good for beambashing tight corners etc no arc blow unlike dc that occasionaly and always in a tight spot would throw out spatter like an explosion in a ball bearing factory

with dc root passes are almost all done negative electrode and yes you can root with 7018 no problem
the exception being 6010 some times neg or pos root uphill /downhill
