Acetylene bottle contents - how long will it last?

Welding with propane is a big no-no. Not just for the reasons found but also because they're weak as acetylene has a shielding effect which is very important for gas welding.

I use oxy propane for forging, silver soldering, and cutting, for those applications its fine, you don't need acetelene for that. It makes no difference.

Well, it takes a bit longer to preheat for the cutting, but yes it's OK. For forging I expect it to be excellent as there really isn't any point in a particularly fierce flame, propane is probably a better choice.

For farm work I'm now using oxy/acet and wouldn't want to use propane. Less focused heat would be much harder to use in awkward places where it is important to be able to focus the heat.

Interesting thread - I think I'll go with rent free Oxygen Acetylene rather then the Propylene alternative that is being offered by some under various brand names.
