Well, I did both. I bought a pair of Sealey stands that go to 700mm and I welded leg extensions on an old pair of stands. My pair have a much wider base than the the new ones. Apologies for out of focus photo, 'open camera' app was messing about.
I'm using them for my Citroen DS Safari (estate). No engine, gearbox, interior, wings or doors. It weighs about a tonne, so between the four, not much loading on each one.
I welded all the way around the overlap. Those welds look OK?
