looks like its had a bodge repair round the top of it with some type of 2 pack putty.
maybe to stem the leak?
looks nothing like the inside of mine obviously an earlier model.

I spotted that. What is that little box then?. It looks like a relay but with fluid in it??

The ovalish, leaking thing at the far side of the pic is a capacitor. Probably used to absorb electrical 'spikes' generated by the HF system, to stop them damaging the rectifiers and other fairly sensitive components.
The HF system on this machine looks non-standard to me. The smaller black, rectangular capacitor (in front of shot with 2 wires on top) is a Miller unit and the HF transformer (to the right) looks lots like a miller unit too. This may be normal, as this was an American made machine but I'm not sure.
Lack of HF may be caused by problems with the HF intensity control - You can see the wire going from the capacitor to the rheostat on the front panel. Check the rheostat connections/ broken windings/shorts to the panel, as this may be your problem.

Some background, the machine came from a college. A bike builder mate of mine used it for years before stepping up to a new all singing and dancing esab unit.
When I first got the machine, the hf worked fine. I wasn't doing ally but mild steel/4130 cage work. When pedal pushed, arc would jump to job and off I would go.
I tried doing ally one day and it kind of "fizzed", with a very weak arc at the torch.
The guy I got it from came in to check it out and did some basic tests and told me to clean up/gap the hf caps and try again. It didn't help.
I have beeen scratch starting ever since. I have some ally work and some chro mo to do so need to have hf working.
I bought another smaller machine for home use ally welding(sip 160 ac/dc...too cheap to ignore), but I really would like to have this big mother working again.

Email me : Dave@woodfieldwelding.com and I'll send you a PDF of the manual. Be advised, it contains a heap of useful info but the pictures are poor, as this is a scan of a very old document. Warning: Thoroughly read and understand the instructions on wiring to the mains. This machine is not a single phase machine, in that it will run from a 240V domestic socket. It requires 2 Live wires and an earth from a decent 3Phase supply. It may also draw up to 70Amps from the mains at max output. I hope your supply is up to it!

posted on this thread in 2011 when i had issues with me hf turn out to be a broken coil wire on the "BT" relay .soldered and she's done a lot of Ali work until now.
she had a 5 month lay off came to weld no power ,checked foot pedal all good .
opened her up to see the main rheostat had fell off the ceramic backing so bonded it back on but still no joy.
anyone got a wiring diagram so i can trace whats going on lost mine i had from before.
dont know if the fallen rheostat has touched or fried something. foot pedal depressed get small relay 1 kicking in but main relay nothing.all fuses checked and are good.
