advice on an old bristol pump

I have seen a very similar pump, not a Bristol though, in use, it was in a mates shed when he rented it and he chucked it in a skip when he left. No water pump involved, it had a cast iron tank-which looked like a cistern- bolted on the wall above it. The pump itself was exactly the same as the single cyl air cooled pumps I had.
My first compressor used a Prestcold fridge pump, about as big as that pump, all the refrigeration pumps I saw had in common was non bsp threads and no fins, well they will have been cooled by the refrigerant won't they?

For a cheap easy to get coolant pump, I'd take a trip down to scrap yard and get a 12v auxiliary water pump off a car. A fair few are fitted to Mercs, BMW, Renault ect, even my T4 transporter has one. Pushfit 1/2" inlet and outlet and around 10- 15ltr a min flow.

yeah im unsure what pump to use

the 12v sounds ideal 10 - 15lt a min would be perfect

im thinking either an aircon car rad or a heater matrix rad would be perfect for the job and give a bit of heat

I suppose its down to how hard you are going to be working it, i would try it with a simple header tank like suggested by Graffian first.

yeah thanks ill give that a go first ive got some spare tubing from a car i stripped and expansion tank that should get me by for now see how it goes

last thing i want is to sieze the pump up or cause damage to it

tbh it wont be hard worked

Keep it simple but dont forget anti freeze!
this picture is what I was talking about, previously, you do not need a pump thermo siphon is the way old central heating worked so a little compressor is no problem !

ahh what a perfect example

got the compressor pump all cleaned and sealed back up and bolted it back to where it should be

pressured it up and all seems well drained the tank and time to clean the inside out as it has some water and gunk in it

got a new camera today a Panasonic lumex 18mp 21x digital zoom a massive step up from my phone haha

any ways heres a proper pic if how she sits in her former glory

No. You have to get the heat out of the system otherwise there will be no net temperature drop in the cooling coils.

Did you take the bore and stroke measurements, whats the rating of the motor, see if we can have some idea of its CFM. Must say I really do like the looks of it, bet it runs nice and quiet as opposed to a modern one.

yeah it is alot quieter than modern ones id rather an older system to any modern unit any day


but saying that the tank has some amount of gunk in it i started cleaning it last night with great difficulty there is a access holes on one side so getting there slowly

i took a picture of it last night but had to reboot the computer

my bets are the tanks never been cleaned out

(norm spanners ) - the motor is a single phase 2hp motor running at 1450 speed again i took a picture of the plate on it ill upload it soon

I would borrow a clip on ammeter and just check current draw just before she switches off with that gearing it might just be reaching max amps ?

borrowed my father inlaws tonight when turning it on its drawing 8.3 amps then when its been running for a second or 2 goes down to 6.9 so im guessing thats quite good

Yeah that is good, BUT you need to check it when it is just about to switch OFF to check to see if it is over geared.
For instance I have one of my 1ph compressors, because it is very high geared , set to just off load as it gets to the max amps, that the motor is rated at, rather than at the pressure that I want, but I use that one for high volume pumping and use it on a generator (the motor keeps running the compressor just off loads, and only start it when empty) If I hold the off loader valve in I can get it to go to 160 psi but the amps go to 14/15amps.

ahh yes i get you now ill give it a check at the min it cuts off at around 160psi
