I have seen a very similar pump, not a Bristol though, in use, it was in a mates shed when he rented it and he chucked it in a skip when he left. No water pump involved, it had a cast iron tank-which looked like a cistern- bolted on the wall above it. The pump itself was exactly the same as the single cyl air cooled pumps I had.
My first compressor used a Prestcold fridge pump, about as big as that pump, all the refrigeration pumps I saw had in common was non bsp threads and no fins, well they will have been cooled by the refrigerant won't they?
