Agricultural Water Tank - Tap

Hi guys,

I know a few of you are small holders, farmers and such, so perhaps you can help.

A customer of mine is looking for a tap for their water tank. It’s either a 1000L or a 1000 gallons. I think it is about 10ft in diameter and 3ft deep.

Anyhow, it apparently has a 1-½” BSP outlet.
I need a tap suitable to plumb a hozelock style connector into that isn’t going to leak.
Customer currently has the lid off a 25l drum, with a hole in it and a tonne of PTFE tape.

I’ve bought a few 1-½” BSP taps in case I have to make something up.

is there an off the shelf item available? I’ve searched high and low.

Possibly an IBC adapter, look very similar to what you have there

The problem is I think there are variations of IBC outlets too

If it is 1 1/2" BSP the simplest option would be a female/female reducer down to 3/4" BSP male/male ball valve and Hozelock mail fitting.
Or socket bush nipple valve.
All depends on what you can easily get your hands on.

That's a good link thanks, I can't believe the prices have dropped so far, I have never considered PVC or ABS for projects.
I used to fit a lot of this back 20 odd years back, but it was expensive than even considering the reduced labour costs compared to threaded galvanised.

The IBC ones the customer has already got are bigger and about a 2” coarse thread

As said above - suitable sized BSP socket reducer - from what ever the tank is down to what ever tap to use - domestic garden tap would work. PTFE tape on the tank, or thread sealant,, maybe a brace to stop it being turned or to support it and stop it flexing about when theres a hose on it.

I’ve found a reducer luckily. It already has that type of arrangement fitted but obviously 1 ½” straight through.

Bit small for the current hole.

think I’ve got this sorted now will update once the bits get delivered

Whatever adaptor you use make sure & use a ball valve (preferably full bore) & not a standard tap, otherwise you will get a very poor flow from the tank.

I ordered a Presto 1½” BSP Tap so that I could make something on the lathe but this will probably be quicker and cheaper

That’s a good point. Damn. Oh well I need a new brass tap at home, I will order a ¾” ball valve.

We don’t use NPT in the UK, you see some bright Brit invented the “Whitworth“ thread for about 180 years ago, and that then was developed over time When the steam industry really took off to include a Male tapered thread that would seal again a tapered or parallel female with jointing paste, later ptfe tape came along and the rest is history.

BSP is the worldwide standard for plumbing fittings and pipe threads. DIN, JIS and ISO 7 are all identical to BSP.
