consensus seems to be keep it paint free.

For once I’m gonna listen to the good folk on here and go for some sort of wax, after it’s been polished up a bit more

@The_Yellow_Ardvark got me into linseed oil heated up with beeswax in it.
I highly recommend it.

I haven’t got any linseed oil. I do have a couple of bars of bees wax but I’ll never be able to find it.

will proper furniture wax do?

it’s the real stuff in a tin, fancy brand but I can’t remember the name now

A good car wax will be better.
If you go with furniture wax you will need many layers.
