Air hose reel

Has anyone done by themselves? How do you make the rotating part work with compressed air, wouldn't the outside part always be turning??

Great question! I have a spare (water) hose reel and tried this the other day before realising that the centre needs to rotate
(I don't have the answer, just looking forward to seeing the answer!)

The part circled consists of the shaft with a straight fitting on the end. The brass piece at 90 degrees spins on the straight fitting and is held on by the circlip on the end. The straight fitting has a hole to line up with a recess in the spinning part. There are seals (probably o-rings) between the two parts.

On better quality products they are generally a double O ring set up, and the shaft acts as the support for one end of the reel.

The part you have linked to is way over spec for an air line. More likley to be one for a pressure washer with that pressure rating

I can't find one for air that looks the same as that one from the reel image

I don't think that one would work. I think the part needs to be like the one I posted before, because only one of the parts should rotate and it should be 90 degrees to the main shaft. What do you think Ton-Up??

Unfortunately in the world of mass produce cheap items they like to use one item for multiple purposes.

I think that is the only one that works for the air hose reel, since i can't find any for air that has the same shape/characteristics

The one linked to by @pondy should work. The bolt would allow the rest to swivel around it and the upper part could be rotated 90 degrees to allow the supply hose to enter from the side. Not sure how durable or if would add to much of a restriction. Depends on what you use the airline for

According to the table here, 1/4" BSP is 11.4mm inner diameter? I have 10mm hose (and all my fittings must be 1/4" BSP, now I think about it) so looks like this is worth a punt for less than a fiver

Edit: I'm in no hurry to try this so have sprung for the £2.10 version from China

deublin are industry standard for rotating couplings but they won't come cheap.

I've used these before for transferring water to rotating parts (presses for making glass moulds, and chill rollers in printing applications) and also for air onto reelstands/splicers for newspaper/magazine printing machines.

That would work, but it doesn't have to be 90deg as its the inlet. It could be a straight hydraulic type swivel connector like this with appropriate fittings:-

Will be interesting to see how big the internal slots or holes are, even if its not great should be fine for blow guns and tyres.

Retractable air hoses are so cheap these days it's not worth messing about, I bought one of the big ones from Aldi many years a go, the hose on it perished pretty quickly as it's mounted in an open barn. Even after replacing the hose with a really flexible 20m one from Pirtek it still only owes me £70. Don't know why you would want to be rewinding it manually when a quick tug allows to retract on it's own.
