Air impact gun question

That's the milwaukee cordless one I got pal, it's a beast of a thing, it's got about 1000 nm of slackening torque I think

Could be the same model then, that one has 1354nm. Really impressed with them. I have a metabo one and it does me but the Milwaukee ones are something else. Trouble is they start making you lazy and it gets used for everything! Thing is with them you can take them everywhere which is why the van lads use them

Yep it's the same one pal, very powerful.

Max torque is the theoretical torque the gun can produce but there are mechanical and friction losses so not all of the power is usuable and transmitted to the fastener

The Ingersoll rand guns are use nor ornament compared to a snap on MG725.
The rand gun produces huge torque for the first few blows then tails off to nothing where as the snap on gun has a constant higher output with no power drop off.
My MG725 removes truck wheel nuts at 650nm where the rand gun doesn't budge them.

I have read several post on this subject on the forum in the past but to date not needed to use an impact gun but wonder if you had a hose from your compressor that filled an air tank (propane bottle ?) near to the job, then a 3ft big dia hose to the gun giving a large bulk of air via the big hose over a short distance to drive the gun to max ??

hook it up to a nitrogen bottle set to 300 psi and something will move lol, i believe it will void your guns warranty!

If they were so tight that it took your entire body weight on a breaker bar no way an 800nm gun will slacken them mate. That is normal. My nitrocat is rated at 1100FT Ibs and doubt it would slacken that amount of required torque

Doing a quick calc' Assuming a 16 stone man on a 3 foot breaker bar = 16x14x3=672 lbft which is 911 NM Given that bouncing up and down on the bar will increase the peak applied torque then it really is no surprise the gun at 800NM didn't undo the fastener, bearing mind that the gun's quoted maximum torque will be under ideal conditions and is probably a bit ambitious anyway.

10mm is enough for most guns over a reasonably short length, if you had a long way to run then yes you could have a second tank close by, but use something longer than 3'! A 10mm hose over say 5 meters is probably going to deliver all the air a normal gun will take, there's no point in going mad.

I have experimented with larger bore pipes and it does make a lot of difference.

Interesting, what make(s) of gun(s)? Cheap ones are considered to use a lot more air so might see gains, decent ones ought to be alright.

I only buy Ingersoll Rand guns, mostly 1/2 and 3/4 Ti models.

That's a thought...... The hose - that I was given with the compressor - is a long auto retractable wall mounted one. Can't be sure on the exact length but it's looong, there is a lot of hose between compressor and gun and I am only in a normal sized garage. Maybe I am losing some power that way...

I do like the gun having done about a dozen jobs with it since I bought it and no probs until the last two. To be fair the wheel nuts were very tight and had a good coating of rust at the end and the crank bolt was literally covered in threadlocker so....

Just, like @Cobbler states, when I bought it I was given the impression from the IR website that I would be able to strip down a Caterpillar dump truck, if one should happen to break down near by

wound-up hoses loose a fair bit -of velocity using a large amount of cfm. best kept strait

Well I've just been out to the garage and ditched the extension hose. Now I've got a circa 15ft 10mm air line straight from regulator to gun. Let's see if that improves things.

i have a cheapo 3/4 one here, a 7 or 8 yr old 1/2 IR impact gun (good for 1300nm iirc) and a king tony stubby 1/2 gun as well.
the stubby one is the one that's used most because its handy and has decent power about it, the IR one id pull out if the stubby one wasn't up to the job but of all the guns, i run em all between 100-140psi, pretty much as the compressor fills and empties.
its not recommended for the guns im sure but its never done any of them any harm here anyways.
if the air was at 90psi id consider my gun to be half asleep tbh.

the strongest 1/2 impact gun available today is this girl, or at least it was last time i looked which was about 6 mths ago.

the facom being the second closest runner up but for stupid money compared to the beta.

dont forget tho, too much power out of an impact gun can do more harm than good unless your used to the tune of it.
