Alarm system for my shed

after looking here went to http://pocketdiallers.com/products2.html and got me a board for my phone (actually off ebay) This is what I was looking for, my unit is a few miles from the house and in the middle of the country so no one will hear it.
Got an old nokia kicking around too.

Does anyone have a PIR in their shed/unit? and do spiders set them off? I have quite a few spiders at the moment they have recently all moved in I will put a couple of door contacts in. I don't really want to rush there in the dark to find a spider...

just use a standard 240v external pir used for lighting through a relay spiders and flies dont set them off

i have sensetive pir's at work and standard in my garage at home no spiders have ever set them off, if your alarm allows it set it for double knock which simply means that the pir will need to be activated twice ie pick up 2 movements before setting off the alarm

I have the exact same response alarm as shown in the link to the mobile phone dialer installed in the garage, i use contact switch for the door and the supplied pir sensor at the back of the garage angled towards the front which covers 2 windows on one wall and a conventional opening door and an up and over. I too have an issue with spiders at the moment as they try to come in out of the cold BUT the alarm has never been activated by them - the pir sensor has a jumper inside to alter its sensitivity with regards to insects, 1 being most sensitive, 2 being the standard setting and 3 for insect false alarms, if i do get any false alarms all i will need to do is set the jumper to 3. Some other alarm systems refer to this jumper as a knock senor (nothing to do with vibration), its how many times the sensor is triggered in a quick succesion before it will activate the alarm

most alarm systems are 12 volt and have a 12 volt sealed lead acid battery as backup so you will need a 12 volt relay.
dont go for the cheap alarms that take a 9 volt and 2, 1.5 volt batterys as back up you never know when they are dead

Snooper, i have the same response alarm system as shown at the begining, and its one like you said with 2 x 9 volt batteries used as a back which i'm not keen on at all, i have access to a 12v sealed lead acid battery as a back up but i am struggling to come up with a form of charger for it - i have been googling away for solutions for the last couple of weeks but am struggling - any recommendations

yeah look at maplins web site for a small automatic / trickle lead acid charger then connect to the battery and the battery to the alarm job done

Tiggy_Dorset - take note of Snoopers advice - i purchased the responce alarm system shown at the begining of your thread from B & Q for £55 (i think they were changing the design etc and so wanted rid of 'old' style stock) back in the summer and fitted it 2 months ago (came with 2 pir's and 2 door contacts and bell box), although completly happy with it, it has always been at the back of my mind about the backup in case of mains failure/cut as my house alarm and the alarm it replaced both had backups to the control panel AND a seperate battery backup in the bell box.

It will be worth the extra couple of quid for the peace of mind and for that matter the money you will save as in my case by going out and getting a battery and charger

ps i have fitted the bell box as a warning that an alarm is fitted BUT as its a single story garage and easily accessable i have removed the siren and fitted it between the roof joists adjacent to a gap on in the facia board - this way the sound travels throught the gap in the facia board to the outside of the garage AND as its also in the garage it will be ringing in there ears if anyone breaks in

the 12v battry backups are better but they still go dead without you knowing, unless that is untill the power goes off and it only last an hour. i guess they sulphate up with lack of use and constant charging.

i test mine several times per year, i just cut the power to the alarm a new battery is only a tenner or so

Have a look for a "dualtec" unit, it has PIR & ultrasonic, both need triggering to go into alarm condition, was advised best type for a garage.

Ok guys, I have been speaking with my other half and we have both been persuaded to perhaps go for it with alarming the house as well as the shed(s). Obviously we dont want to spend our life savings. Would you guys be so kind as to maybe offer us a few suggestions/recommendations, including links if you have the time
I believe I would require a minimum of 4 PIR's. I would also prefer to have a setup like Snooper's where the house siren and shed siren are kept separate. It would also need to be possible to have the shed alarms active whilst the house is deactivated. Of course i still wish to be contacted by phone if the alarm is activated. I will still add the mobile phone modification if necessary.

Most systems have a chime facility, so you just set the sheds zone(s) to "chime" and the internal sounder will let you know if the zone is activated.

the Honeywell Accenta G4 is a very good panel it has an output for a communicator the panel its self is around 57 quid or you can get the kit with 2 pir and cable, magnetic contact,s siren and dummy siren 104 quid from screwfix
it all depends on what you want to spend that pannel will also double as a fire alarm if you get extra sensors it also give date and time stamp of entry & exit and any alarms
you can get a auto dialer for it from about 35 quid but must have a landline for that

The thing with door sensors is for me someone is already in and then by the time I get ready and over there they could have lifted quite a lot of stuff. Though if I make it difficult to take things like the TIG and MIG and tool box then I should be there while they are trying to take stuff! Maybe not such a good thing but I could always use the golf to run them over a little bit

what you need is your external door to open outwards and then a solid steel gate on the inside so as soon as they get the door open off goes the alarm and they still have to try and get past the gate.

people think its good to have a gate externally but the gate can be worked on to get it open without the alarm activating.
