Aldi Bench Drill problem

I have found out why the quill is erratic in the Aldi jobbies.

started to dismantle the head with view to replacing the bearings for SKF(three in all) but there's nothing wrong with the bearings,it would seem its the pully shaft and quill drive shaft thats at fault.

At the quill pully end the shaft is square and the pullys sleeve is not a tolerance fit and so theres play in that there sleeve,quite a bit actually.

Gonna try and pack the difference with some beer can tin as thats pretty thin.

Is it still within its warranty (3 years I believe)? They will most likely replace it.

Nah man,I bought it over ten years? ago.

Anyway what could they do its a cheapo I expected that but it can be resolved,just a bit fiddly trying to get the pully down whilst making sure square bore doesn't kink the tin shim.

Its not wear,its design tolerence not met.

Seems that a shiimy on the shaft is not possible simply because the shaft and the collar have two purposes...
1.the shaft descends and ascends within the collar.
2.it being square the collar gets driven by the quill pulley.

so its a case of cutting the square shaft off,drilling the quill shaft and tapping a thread,get some correct sized square shaft,turning it about 1/2" the end of one side on the lathe and cutting a screw thread for the tapped quill.

I measured the square shaft and it came under 9mm,the collars square bore is 10mm no wonder it was erratic thats not acceptable.

Bit hard to suggest anything without some photo's of how each piece fits together and such. There should be no need for cutting anything, unless they've pressed something into place. It went together, it should come apart, somehow.

lookn at Kieth Fenner on youtube and the trouble he had making a Chinese bench grinder stop doing the pogo dance across his bench...the Ding dong factorys need some serious quality controll staff before i start taking them serious enough to fill my workshop with it all

some of the crap can be reworked providing u have the basic tool. thats if u like messing on with them to get it rite

Aldi power tools about 10 years ago were a mixture of wolf or Ferm and were built to a very tight budget and a very slack tolerance, if yours has the 16mm chuck it may be the same as the one I had given to me, I made the hilarious mistake of using a 16mm jobber dill in it once... nearly shook itself apart.

16mm is far to big for this little drills capabilities and that taper on the end of the quill is a standard B16, you really need a morse taper inside the quill and IMO at least an MT3 for a 16mm capable chuck.



conclusion: Aldi sell disappointments with a good returns policy

See that small collar well its internal square bore is 10mm,do you see the square shaft on the second pic,well the collar fits over that but the square shaft is just under 9mm square ie the collar is rocking side to side.

Its got nothing to with taking things apart or putting together,basically the quill is vibrating on high speeds and its due to the above parts not within acceptable tolerence.

Couldn't you build up the square with weld on all sides, then mill it back to a good slide fit in the sleeve?

Dan this is the old square peg in a square tube way of getting an expandable drive, its only direct relation to the quill is to make it rotate whilst being extended nearly all drill presses are made this way and although not the best of finishes this little drill was made the best a small amount of money could make.

if the quill is vibrating I would think something is either bent or out of balance do you get this vibration as bad without a chuck on it?

the quill is supposed to be a slide/interference fit in the main body of the drill yet most Asian presses don't have bronze sleeves to replace when they wear
do you have significant play in the quill when extended? >0.005 to remove this type of slack this is the preferred method of action... although it looks quite brutal it does work, I did this to a mates Clarke which fixed the chattering problem and runout was <0.002 but it still cut out after doing 20 or so 13mm holes in 6mm plate, useless pos!

I'll let you know the score when I get this piece of Square 10mm steel through the letter box.

There is no problem with the quill or the bearings,no play whatsoever and the play is in the square sleeve...far to much play even for 1mm.

Couldn't you build up the square with weld on all sides, then mill it back to a good slide fit in the sleeve?

That would cause to much distortion and secondly I don't have a mill.

It was this thread I was in, but even I'll be damned if I can figure out how I so poorly misinterpreted what you'd said first time around. Mind must have been on other things.

Probably rubbish quality bearings in it too. Maybe change them for branded ones ?

I have had an Aldi drill for quite a few years, it's a bit bigger than the Screwfix one I had before and uses two belts instead of one and has more usable speeds. When I first got it I didn't use it much and one day I went into the shed and switched it on to do some drilling and it just buzzed. I thought the motor was having trouble getting started and tried to turn the chuck by hand and it wouldn't budge. I started stripping it and found that whatever the factory in China had used for grease had turned into glue and set solid. I had to heat it up to get it apart and when it was all cleaned out and some LM grease applied it worked perfectly again. (well good enough for anything I want to do)

the last one I worked on I replaced all the bearings in the quill and the upper pulley assy for about £35-45 I think the new bearings were Nachi, cant remember much about the old ones other than they were only Z rated and the new ones were ZZ which relates to the metal shielding being on both sides with the ZZ, it made a tremendous difference regarding the noise and it feels smoother to use.

Erm 'Z' bearings.....they're 'ZZ' bearings and as already stated there's nothing wrong with the bearings although I might(big might)change em for Taper roller cage bearings...much better.

Just throwig a random suggestion out, not knowing how much clearance or so there is with that collar, or how thick the walls are where the square section is, but could you not drill and fit brass grub screws through, at right angles to the square shaft for taking up the slack? In essence, turning that sleeve into something akin to a four point steady.
