Cheap angle grinder stands are a waste of time, I've got one kicking about somewhere if you want to try one you can have mine. The grinder will probably be OK I've had one or two power tools from Aldi and they have been fine.

I bought 2 of those grinders when for some insane reason they dropped the price to £9.99, they have had a fair bit of hobby use and more than happy with them, plus of course the 3 year no argument warranty.

The discs don't last that long and the stand is useless. The grinder is OK. The one I have takes 125mm disks. I've got the Lidl version of the inspection camera too. Thats quite handy.

I've never seen that before on a grinder (perhaps I've lived a sheltered life).
Is variable speed useful?

The only thing I can think it might be used for is slowing down for polishing, but I'd have thought the loss of torque as you slow down would mean it would stall as soon as you lean on it. Might be ok for buffing paint though.

Yeah - weird one. I don't recall using a grinder and thinking "Lordy, I wish this was running slower..."

There are various different non woven surface conditioning, graining & blending abrasives that work better & last longer or only work properly at lower speeds as they tend to overheat and smear if run too fast

Having read rave reviews of these grinders on here I bought one for 19.99 about a year ago and have been really impressed with it. The guard was modified almost immediately to make it more like a 'normal' grinder and after that I have been using it for lots of jobs almost daily. As said above the variable speed can be very handy for specialist disks/mops-one of those things you don't miss till you have it, then you use it all the time. The only thing that bugged me was the quality of the nut, so I have replaced that with one from a scrap Hitachi and disk changes are much easier. Can't get better for anything like £20-i bet a variable speed branded wee grinder is 5 times that.

3000 is too fast for buffing paint.

I've always used mine on max. The trigger is nice the andcitchas a long handle. Great for control but can be a bit awkward in confined spaces

When you've had one inserted where the sun dont shine it is certainly anything BUT , irrelevant---------well at least in my eye ( pun definitely intended ) makes you feel like you dont know whether you are coming or going !

Just to cover myself, the stands would be at least, good for drill grinding on site, for the cost of them.

I've had a little Bosch variable speed grinder for almost 20 years..I find the speed control very useful, and there is no loss of torque at the lower speeds. If it eventually pegs out, I would by another tomorrow (assuming they still make them??).

Ive got an aldi variable speed grinder, the long handle makes it easier to control on bodywork. I got it to use at slower speeds with stripping discs

and for use with a shrinking disc (which is a peice of 1.2mm stainless steel with a bit of forming done to it). the disc works by heating up the high spots on a panel by friction,and when it cools down, the high spot shrinks a bit.

and s generic video from youtube, although I have used compressed air instead of water for cooling (which is slower), but makes more sense in a freezing garage in winter
