All My Vices!

It seems my phone is inundated with vice pics, and I’ve certainly owned a fair few, so I’ve decided to make a thread.

First up is the first ‘proper’ vice I owned, a Record 34P. The P stands for plain but it might as well stand for pain... a pain to wind in and out. A nice vice though, lightweight and strong.

Next up is a little Paramo No 0 I did just last week. You can see design elements from Record and Parkinson here. The fit on this one wasn’t the best, and the whole thing felt a bit cheap compared to a Record.

The replacement for the 34P was a Woden 190/8. I think these are excellent vices. When I bought it I was recovering from surgery and was restricted from lifting heavy things, hence the wheely suitcase shot!

The red scheme wasn’t all that though, and there was a piece of angle bolted onto the back. Someone had lost the washer that stops the slide from pulling out. I was going to hammer these flush but decided to flap disk it all together. It’s underneath paint now! After that it was a pretty simple repaint and restore job.

Next up is a Record 412. This is actually my second one as I broke one. I don’t rate them much, but I didn’t want a Chinese one. Too much slew in the jaws when tightening things, and vastly undersized for my Fobco star. I managed to sell it for three times what I paid though, just for a lick of paint!

My next drill vice was another Record, the much rarer 643. These have reversible hardened and ground jaws held in place with cap screws. A very nice and sturdy vice, I recommend these

In 2018 I was promised a cabinetmaking apprenticeship which led me to buy all sorts of things, including two vices to build a workbench with. I thought a rail vice using the Record 52 and the other using a much larger 53A. I later sold the 53A for good money (the A type have screw covers) and found a 52A with a cracked body but the slide was fine. The slide is different on the A model but the body is identical to the 52, so I did a swap! Sold off the 52 and now I have a rather rare 52A, though I don’t really need it now either... the guy doing the apprenticeship revoked his offer giving no reason, and I sold most of my woodwork tools.

Another wood vice, this time a very old one indeed. Can’t find any before pics, but this one was sold as a garden ornament and had obviously been living in a garden. It was covered in earth and clay, so sandblasting was the only way. Those castings are intricate as... it did all go back together in the end and it’s a cute little vice which works, a miracle considering it had been surrendered to the elements. My friend liked it so I gave it to him, knowing it’s being used and cared for is better than cash for me.

Another wood vice I’ve owned, a Woden 189b/1. I liked this one. Sold it when I bought the matching Records.

Can’t find a pic of this one back together - a Ward and Payne vice, this was a rubbish one. W&P made great chisels, I think this is a generic one where you can insert your logo as needed. A disappointing purchase however it had a working qr mech, so I took it out and used it on the Woden 189b/1 which inexplicably had its lever cut off. I turned the W&P vice into a plain turning one, and sold it for what I paid.

I only bought this little vice because I had a pair of the fantastic cramps. They’re made by P.S&W in Worthington Connecticut, and were patented in 1888, so I assume the vice is of similar age. It’s fairly useless and mainly a novelty.

Next up, an enormous Reed 106Y made in Erie, Pennsylvania. 6” jaws and 67kg of American iron. The bloke who bought it picked it up in bare feet - far braver than I!! Reeds came in light grey or oxide red, but I thought scarlet suited it pretty well too. A full refurb was done to this.

A pair of vices I owned and tidied up for a friend. A bench top mounted Gordon wood vice, I think it’s a bit like the W&P, very generic feeling. The other is a sweet little Carter vice made in Australia, I have to say a nice little piece of equipment and the through bolt jaws are something you only usually see on larger vices.

An early Record No4 but not too early as the patent number isn’t there. Nice vice, barely looks used.

A Record No 0 I was given... not sure why someone took to it with a grinder. Sold this, someone was happy to buy it.

A Record No24 I’ve just finished restoring. What a beast of a thing! A bit too big for me, but the castings were nice. Sold this one though I was only restoring it.
