The Eskdalemuir observatory had a more modern one. It had gears and could take various attachments ( snow plough) on the front. I was often called to give them a hand during the winter to clear paths of snow with the machine. It did a cracking job but top gear was way fast, you were running trying to keep up. The old Allen sythe goes at a more moderate pace, much nicer to walk behind

Hey, I was up there in '70, top dressing forestry from an airstrip on a hill. Didn't know there was an observatory up there then. Reputedly the coldest place in Scotland, quite believe that. We froze!

Dumfedling hill, air strip was on there. It was reputedly the coldest and wettest place.Having lived there I can say with some certainty it was. You must of been working for EFG, the forest round the strip was the biggest privately owned forest in Europe. I started there in the early eighties.

i was given the remains of a 50s triumph speedtwin , the owner had chopped it up and put it in a howard gem but oplened the throttle and it took off itself
another redneck had a bmc 1100 in a ransomes mg5 up here and run his piggery with a 24 v dynamo driven by an old petter m 7hp running on parrafin he had a copper coil in the exhaust to preheat the paraffin
was my cousin, worked on the dredgers on the thames too a very inventive guy

Yep, I worked for Agricultural Aviation then, but only for under a year as they were pants. Great times, but loony. We stayed in assorted farms in the area and when off, had a few drinks in Lockabie.

Back to grass cutting. Friend has an old style pot coil (and a Ginetta G2 to restore, I await the call..) so will go with the Villiers and modern coil with battery ignition. If it works, the least hassle. Just will have to put up with rope starting and smoke. Really, what ever gets rid of the jungle, I am not a purist on kit.
