Angle grinder Guards

I occasionally watch Forged in Fire and have noticed that none of there angle grinders seem to have guards fitted this really surprises me in America as surely if anyone got injured it would be a huge law suit. I dont know about any one on here but I rarely take off a guard on a grinder with cutting disks . If youve every had a thin disk break it really makes you think thank F theres a guard !

It does make one wonder, when a person can extra multiple millions from McDonalds
for being served "Hot coffee".

I see that allot as well, while I have removed the guards when needed for access, I try to get them
back on as soon as possible.

Face it, we are becoming just like those Pakistani shops with people pouring iron barefoot.

For me my 9" grinders all have guards, 125 likewise, 115 always with guard if a cutting disc but without guard if a flap disc.

And having ‘welding curtains’ around the area to protect passers by….Seen this with workmen in the street carrying out pavement repairs…using a Styhl saw, no goggles, no ear muffs and no barriers….dust everywhere…

Some of us weld with bare arms, and others get tattoos instead......

For me my 9" grinders all have guards, 125 likewise, 115 always with guard if a cutting disc but without guard if a flap disc.

I hate 9" grinders if I have to cut something big its the petrol saw always so much safer, ever since my brother in law had a good attempt at cutting his leg off with one a few years back I avoid if possible. The one time I had too was on my second welding table which is a 2ftX3ft bit of 1" plate I used a dished grinding disc full contact to clean up the surface it was very scary

Sometimes you have to remove the protection from the angle grinder for cutting in difficult places. Discs 125 and smaller do not fall into pieces, at least in my experience, this has not happened. Glasses and so on, of course, are required. Everyone decides for themselves the extent of their risk. That said, does not apply to 9 inches, I avoid those hellish tools.

I've seen UK fabricators doing the same.

Having had a couple of cutting disks explode (for want of a better term) on me I wouldn't use one without a guard, no to mention taking a finger off or worse..

I've taken a chunk out of a 9" cutting disk, never experienced one exploding though. My only two serious goof ups with the devils tool has been not observing where the sparks are going! First time managed to set fire to my overalls, roughly where the right trouser leg meets the left trouser leg and felt a rather warm sensation you know where. The other one was setting a somewhat leaky acetylene hose on fire, necessitating a quick dash for the cylinder key.

i was working in a shipyard one time, spent 3 days grinding with a 9" above me head, (not many public places you can safely say that without raising an eyebrow or two!! ) it was torturous!!
It was also bloody cold, being the middle of winter, so i was stupidly wearing some of those horribly cheap "sweat pants" type things under my boiler suit..... oh boy... those things burn well

im usually one to turn a blind eye to safety things, but man is running without a guard silly , one slip with a cutting and its loss of fingers or loss of use in a split second
