I hate 9" grinders if I have to cut something big its the petrol saw always so much safer, ever since my brother in law had a good attempt at cutting his leg off with one a few years back I avoid if possible. The one time I had too was on my second welding table which is a 2ftX3ft bit of 1" plate I used a dished grinding disc full contact to clean up the surface it was very scary

I use them a lot and find they are just as safe, if not more so than the smaller grinders, well if used properly. I couldn't use a petrol saw for the stuff I do, would never get it into the places required.
I have seen guys use stihl saw discs on 9 inch grinder, that gives me the shivers.

Never really had a disc explode on me, I have ripped them off the center but never explode.

Macho men don’t use grinder guards, because chicks dig scars and severed tendons.
Plus you can’t put a 9” disc on a 4.5” grinder if the guard is in the way.

For best effect be sure to lean on the tool until she almost stalls. If it aint smoking you aint trying.
Safety squints are optional. Face shields are for pussies. Can't drag on your smoke if you are wearing a mask.

Be sure to hurl the grinder about to ensure there are plenty of chunks knocked out of the disc for extra style points.

Best one i saw was Tips from a shipwright, Circular saw blade mounted on an angle grinder, must have been at least a 7 or 8" dia blade, he was using it overhead to chop some planks out of an old wooden trawler. It looked terrifying.

I don't remove the guard from any of my grinders. Including air cut off saws. Maybe I'm just used to them but never find them to be an issue at all.

Having all types of saws on hand means you'll always reach what you need to cut, without taking gaurds off and squeezing in etc. Eg, grinder, cut off air saw long reach and mini air saw etc.

If you need to remove the guard to "get in " you are using the wrong tool simple as that .

A trip to the eye clinic at your nearest hospital is always a nice H&S refresher course. Dad sat in there with metal in his eye for 5 hours before they dug it out, he said it wasnt pleasant.
My wife had a visit there a few years back hers wasnt grinder related but the guy next to us was. Builder, grinder, no eye protection.
Its an expensive lesson to learn the hard way.
