Ive allways been in to power tools had my very own petrol mower at about 12 
im a gardener and i only really got in to it for the machinery all due to my gramps who i used to spend as much time with as possible he taught me so much about everything i hope if i ever have kids i can pass on all the stuff he taught me be nice if they wanted to follow in me footsteps to if im honest be nice to add and son to the back of me van !

tons of wood working tools
and i use an angle grinder,welder un supervized and have learn't to use a lathe
been taught all the H &S by my dad and i think its good to learn young and get taught properly

Im 18, but started the first landrover rebuild around 15/16, its taught me a hell of a lot and im all still in one peice! I sometimes help out with teaching at school/college now, so its certainly taught me a lot!
Being too cautious over H&S I think can create more of a problem...when Im teaching ill always tell them the risks, how to deal with a problem etc and what not to do, just so they dont get curious!

thats whats lead me to have so much tools for my age dad bought me a landrover when i was 13 for working with him through the summer and its ready for mot now

When I was fourteen I had an arc welder,Oxy acelatine, 9 inch grinder(no soft start,2800watts ), 4.5 inch grinder, power drills,ect. Made a few pound for myself and bought a mac toolbox. still have it now.

I had a welding set,burning gear,grinders etc when i was twelve......
Mind someone nicked the bottle key......Don't know why but it'd appear at the weekends.
Me father is a boilermaker n used to work away a lot with a welder and burner from the area.
Each week i'd get a weld test set up and had to have it welded before they got back the Friday night..
These day's with all these cotton wool kids around i'd be happy for a bairn that's actually wanting to learn something useful instead of sitting in front of an x-box....
If the kid wants to learn let him.......

i got my first angle grinder at 11 and an arc welder about the same time i asked for it for my birthday, none of my family or anything had ever done welding, i just thought it was awesome i still have that welder, but the grinder went wrong about 3 years ago, replaced it with an almost identical one.
anyway, i didn't die, so go for it haha actually never been hurt by a grinder at all.

Interesting question. I consider angle grinders some of the safer things in the garage for the kids to have a go at. The disk is clearly something to avoid and 4 1/2" grinders are quite manageable. They can learn some respect for tools on that, the requirement to have sufficient face protection too and where the sparks are going. My kids are only 1, 7 and 9 so they don't work in the workshop yet but they know they're welcome to ask how to do stuff and learn.
Other tools which look less dangerous can turn out to be quite the opposite. For example a pillar drill can spit the workpiece into your hands, or grab a sleeve and pull it in to the chuck. But the thing in my garage I keep an eye on is the compressor. Although it only produces compressed air, the temptation is to fool around with it and I remember the case of one guy in my home town who died after a workmate, fooling around with the air hose, gave him a blast in the ****. Funny joke.
