Could you alter the way you cut? I usually swing the guard round if possible to direct the dross away from me.
Hows' about a very thin sheet of steel with holes at each corner to enable cord or the like to let you tie it to your chest/stomach area. Just measure the area that is getting the damage and cut to suit!

About an hours work in the making, a length of thin, but good soft leather that was left over from a project, and the elastic from a pair of braces the hubby had in his wardrobe.
I'm sure there's a market available there
