Another rust removal question

There is anhydrous citric acid and there is citric acid monohydrate; the latter gives you very slightly less bang for your buck.
Most of the stuff that is on sale is food grade, probably a bit more expensive than non-food grade.

It's just missing Not Tested on Animals for the quadfecta.

*I didn't find any listed in the usual places that wasn't!

I have a few old underbody brackets undergoing their final 'polishing' soak as we speak.
I plan to use that Lidl spray. I haven't used that exact one before but the Lidl paints have performed well to date.
I'll be top coating with a few coats of the Toolstation acrylic I've wittered on about in another thread.

I'll report back on the performance in a decade or so.............................

I’ve not used this coating before, but I’ve used their paints and lacquer on stuff that’s stuck in the garden all year and been pleased with the results.
I’ve used expensive stuff and been disappointed so at £3 a tin for the zinc/ali spray I didn’t think I could go wrong.

Have you shaken the can yet? I brought the paint in from the garage yesterday and stood the cans upside down in the airing cupboard as I usually do.
I've been shaking the can vigorously and I don't hear or feel the usual ball bearing rattling around inside.

Not yet, I will have a look tomorrow and see if I get the usual ball bearing sound.

Just shaken the cans and both have ball bearings in them.

Hmm, interesting. So either mine has sat for so long that the solids have settled into a lump or they forgot the ball bearing. Squirt and see then.

I am so glad that there are people who take the time to do this and share results.
I’ve got all the stuff I need to make up his mixture, not bothering with an inhibitor since the horseshoes are not going to be used in any precision processes.

That's where I got the recipe I showed in post #19. The hexamine inhibitor I got from an Army Surplus Store online - it's used as a solid fuel.

I'm interested in the use of hexamine inhibitor, so did a bit of internet research and came up with this;

New measures targeting bomb-making materials come into force

Stronger restrictions on poisons and explosive substances came into effect on 1 October 2023.

Did it work ok? I saw in the comments section that someone suggested using green tea as it contained the correct inhibitor bits and bobs.

That's why Mamod stopped selling it as fuel for their steam engines - before they went out of business. Army surplus stores are the only source I'm aware of.

I cannot comment on whether or not it works as I haven't done any controlled trials of my own, but the video referenced above addresses that question.

I don't think you can get it any more under nanny state rules.

We had a couple of army surplus places near here, but they have gone now. Guess its gone out of fashion.
