(Another) Workbench - Opinions Please

Thanks for posting all the pics, I need one of those so that's what I'll be doing with all the box section I have left from my bike build I reckon. Top job fella.

You have some skills if you are new to this, top suff mate and i too wouldn't of waited for help to turn the table over as i would of wanted to see it in place too

Very nice, You did well up-righting it on your own. I'll be building a Hydraulic table in the next 6 months, I already have the top, a piece of 16mm and boy-o-boy is that mother heavy.

How is the surface for level/flat, and more importantly what are you going to be making on it

Straight up, this was my first project, although I learnt MIG at tech college which obviously helped no end. Bottom line is that with so much info on t'internet and so many folks happy to give advice, plus thinking it all through in advance and taking time on the build it wasn't that hard, anyone could do this as a first project.

As for uses, we'll VW restoration is/will be my thing, engine rebuilds, etc. and without any flat surface whatsoever, I needed to do something about it, so built this little baby.

Crackin bench that mate, top marks for the design, setting out and clamping. As for getting it upright on your own Health and safety would have a fit. Enjoy working on it

Anyone recommend a stockholder in the York / Wetherby/ Leeds area ?

Another supplier you could have tried is County Steel in Ripon.

There is also a fabrication firm in York who also have a stores. You can phone up and order steel in whatever length and dimensions you want and there is no minimum order. I found them useful for stuff I didn't need often and didn't want to buy a complete lengh.

It might have been Minster engineers. I'm not sure though, but there arn't that many medium size fab firms in York.

thoess - I used Acaster Steel in Tholthorpe, friendly, quick to quote and beat a couple of other stockholders, delivered nice n' early and put a LOT of effort into manhandling the plate into my garage. Happily recommend them.

Ah, there is a cabin place at the back of there who one used to work for sometimes...

Do these guys cut to size and do small orders? Might have one last gate to make as a finale.

yeh, they cut all my box and some angle for me. I'm sure they'll do small orders - mine wasn't exactly the biggest.
