Anti Slip Material

This time of year paints and glue will be out of the question, if it was jet washed off in the summer and allowed to dry my choice would be yacht varnish with grit. This time of year I think its got to be chicken wire or screw on strips.

Those strips look ok but for a longer lasting solution chicken wire works very well.
When I lived in the Brecon Beacons we had a similar flight of steps in the garden - I ended up walking up the grass bank each time - far safer! used some chicken wire and the grip was incredible - not very pretty though!

Ive got a whole roll of chicken wire but fitting it will be a mare as I have to take off the sheet of ply first and that will involve moving all the wood I have stacked underneath it.

I prefer the lazy boy approach of buying those strips and screwing down in place

You can buy decking which has every other recess filled with a resin which has grit impregnated into it under pressure. For such a small area i'd be inclined to just swap the timber. Anything you stick on there will come off very quickly (and probably trip you up!)
We used to use miles of it for decking balconys to apartment blocks until Building Regs banned the use of timber after Grenfell.

As mentioned above, pressure wash it.

Wrap mesh chicken wire around the steps and next year resin and sand in the grooves

Hi John, that's exactly the stuff I need. What is it called and where do I get some from ?

I need quite a bit.

Its for the external wooden staircase that leads up to my office at home.

The wooden treads are a magnet for moss and algae, add a small amount of rain and its like walking on ice covered in oil

Are they deck boards mate?

Theses are the offending steps. They don't look too bad but they are slippery as hell.

The screwed in strips are just the ticket, much easier to install than the glued on variety.

Ok, not a critiscism of your wodden stairs, but this is a welding forum, you could build some nice metal stairs, with scrolls in the handrails and anti slip stair treads..........

Whatever you do don’t use chequer plate - I wen’t to an HSE seminar on car transporter safety some years ago; they had their test rig demonstrating the grip of different surfaces against a standard test shoe sole - chequer plate was worst by a huge margin - bare steel sheet offers more grip. Apparently it was originally designed for truck floors to make pushing pallets across them easier, I still cringe now every time I see the stuff!

Yep. That’s in one of the labs in Buxton, I’ve been on that, it’s good fun

And nope won’t be using any chequer plate. I’ve ordered the strips re ommended by @WorkshopChris

There is absolutely no good reason for anyone to be there, unless they had climbed over the fence and were mooching around. So wooden decking does have it's uses.
