Any one removed the foil from kitchen doors and painted the MDF?

Hoping to move and the kitchen needs a revamp as the foil is peeling on the doors. New Doors are well over £1000 so Winchgirl suggested painting them so over to you any one done it?
How difficult was it to remove the foil?
What paint did you use?
How durable was it?

Buyers will probably do their own kitchen so just leave it as is. Lots of work for little return. If they haggle over the doors being shabby worst case is you say new doors=1k and give them that. Or you can spend hours/days stripping and painting in the winter. Kitchen doors for me are a spray job outside in the spring/summer.

I just need to roll it in glitter as some people would be put off as they can’t see how it would look with a new kitchen

Fair enough, but currently selling my late Fathers house and the agents have advised against so much as picking up a paintbrush.

If you just carefully slice the loose bits of vinyl off, degrease it, rub down and then prime it with Zinsser you should be able to stick eggshell on top without removing all the foils. Use 2 pack filler to cover any holes in the foil that are visible, but it's usually edges that have gone.

And as for paint, my exploits are mainly with a traditional wood kitchen but I am forced to use Farrow and Ball by my good Lady. However the valspar stuff from B&Q was a lot easier to work with, just not the "right colour"

Proper zinsser primer and anything will stick.

And these are some Ikea doors I did, paid normal price for the carcasses but got a load of doors etc from bargain corner.

degreased rubbed down with fine grit then painted with a Wagner sprayer - officially the garden fence one! Farrow and ball eggshell thinned by abot 10%

If you've not got an agent in yet, do so and ask them.

Agent when I sold my mum's house was as above - leave it well alone. Clean it, but let buyer see it's usable as is, but a blank canvas for their own choice. My sister thought otherwise, but as I was the one dealing with it . . .

Sold for 50,000 more than my sister thought, so what did she know

easily scratches painted over some white laminate and it chips of easily but if your selling it and want to tart it up just fill the chipped off stuff a quick sand over prime and paint it dont matter how long it lasts as long as you get the sale so either leave as is or a quick paint job over the top

if your paying that you have more money to spend

id make them before id pay that price

as goes for doors and drawers measure up what you have the sizes and go match them door and drawers you can get them cheaper elsewhere

ebay second door and drawer panels last time i bought loads i bought proper wood at 5-10.00 a panel

As above if selling don’t bother you won’t gain anything, just make sure everything is clean. In the process of selling my late mother’s house at the moment, kitchen and bathroom well past there sell by date but estate agent advised not to waste money on them, as long as they are functional buyers will live with them until they update to their own tastes.

Can’t help with removing the foil but if you can get it off I can recommend Valspar kitchen unit paint available from B &Q

When I was selling last bungalow it needed both bathrooms and kitchen updating and was advised not to do anything. Good advice, the buyer totally remodelled the kitchen, removing a wall and replaced both bathrooms completely. Heard of someone removing a new bathroom because it was the wrong colour.

worked in a few houses where they ripped a virtually new kitchen and bathroom out and replaced. best just leaving as is as long as its tidy ish

In the 1990's my pal PIP , was a high end kitchen fitter doing multi million pound bedroom & kitchen jobs in central London , most of his work was carefully taking out almost new fitted kitchens and fitting what the salesman had sold . He made a nice side income selling the second hand stuff .

I did it, probably half day to remove doors & draw fronts & strip skins off. The mrs then painted them, not sure what paint she used but its wipe clean and durable.
