So the answer to the question "Any reason I can't trickle charge through the trailer socket?" is "no - it works well!" (other than the transparent window failure, documented over here)
Connected a Noco 10 A smart charger to pins 9 and 13
Connects via the anderson connector that came with the charger, but with the latch clip cut off.
The cabling into the pin is secured with table ties which means that the pull force at the anderson connector feels like less than 1KG so I'm comfortable that driving off while still plugged in won't be harmful.
It's been jury-rigged for the last three weeks (and permanently plumbed in over the weekend) and so far no problems starting the car.

Post it note stuck on the steering wheel saying charger in big letters may help the problem
Or even a 3d print which clips on might be more robust.

I think I would have a short rope somewhere that pulls on the disconnect bits

Appreciate the thoughts, folks, but we can probably overthink this. I'm the only one who drives this car and I'm already in the habit of plugging and de-plugging.
And realistically the worst outcome is that the wires rip out of the trailer plug, which is a five minute fix.
I'm declaring this project done (and have a new plan re the transparent window thanks to @Hopefuldave!)

Follow up as I just linked to this in another thread.
So the key question of charging is that it works great. When I plug the noco up the car's chuff, then we're good to go and the car starts maybe 8 or ten times from a charge.
The connectors work well, too. I mostly remember to unplug it but maybe three times in the last eight months I've just driven off and the connector has safely pulled apart, bounced along the road at totally legal speeds, and then was able to be re-connected without having to replace anything.
One time, I put the connector on the wrong way round (removing the key also removed the one-way-only connection) but all that happened was the Noco charger showing a red "reverse polarity" lamp with no ill effects.
So.... I'm calling success on this one.
