How good are they?

Well: Not that exact model but have a similar direct drive and it drives me insane, can hardly be in the workshop when it's running.

It's so bad I am looking at the Wolf Dakota 3hp 100l belt drive, they tend to go for around £230 and will offer a much more useable machine with half the noise.

I can echo Steve's comments. I have had a similar one for years and it is a noisy little thing! It works a treat and it's been very reliable but it makes such a racket. I keep meaning to sell it as I have a twin cylinder belt drive one that's as quiet as anything, but the noisy one is so handy to wheel up the drive when I need to pump up a tyre or whatever.

Very true and they are good little machines, mine is the Aldi one..BUT when it is on it is impossible to talk to anyone in the workshop and eventually it does make you want to go out away from the racket....ok for occasional use but even an airbrush makes it kick in every couple of mins.. not nice at all

used an almost identical one - My sons and even managed to spray a car with it, just plan your spraying and let it catch up, Great to chuck in the boot, which you cant with a bloody great 14CuFt Ingersol Rand. a lot depends what room you have and what you want from the machine.

sorry was quite noisey. outside, moving it about round the car. inside maybe even worse.its a fast running machine hence it seems to make more noise than a normal Piston compressor.

I was wondering what sort of "load" you're going to be putting on the compressor. I have several, one of which is a Bambi, which is just like a fridge running, but it achieves this at the expense of performance, which is not a problem for my airbrushing application.

All things that go onto a compressor, have a cfm rating, ie a mini gun may be 4 cfm, a full size spray gun or breathing eqpt, say 7cfm, air tools for a garage, alot more (I would presume). If these figures exceed that of your comp, then it won't be a happy bunny at all.
Another way of measuring a comps potential is by it's FAD, free air displacement, which I think is usually less than the cfm for a given machine.

Hi Buddah,
as already said by many others, they really do sing a bit because the compressor pump has a short stroke/bore. The v twin cylinder models can be picked up for around the £200 mark, run at 2/3 the speed of the single cylinder kit you're looking at, and with a 50 litre receiver kick in at around the 26kg mark so pretty portable too.
What would make a bit of difference would be to stand it on a piece of rubber sheet, about 4mm thick should do. This reduces the harmonic noise frequency by absorbing the sound wave energy ( load of scientific boredom but actually works).
You pay's your money and takes your chances, but the only other way really is to make a 3 sided box, line it with cord carpet then staple more carpet the opposite way up to double line it cheaply. Leaves plenty of room for air to circulate and be drawn in, and the fan on the motor will pull air through to cool the pump so not as shabby as it may sound, but works too.
Good luck, price always restricts us ...better tools or nicer toys?!

I want to use the compressor for sans blasting, spraying that type of work.

You will struggle with sand blasting with a 3 or 4 KW unit. Blasting really does need a big compressor. I set up a 50 CFM, 11 HP Atlas Copco for a guy who was setting up a little business blasting car and bike bits. I tried to tell him it wouldn't be enough but he was convinced it would be, until he started using it !
As to noise, much of it comes from the air intake. All cheap compressors come with very small air filter housings that do little to suppress noise, so silencing it will noticeably reduce emitted sound. Mounting the receiver on cushioned feet will reduce noise even more. Ultimately though, cheap, small compressors, even belt drive units are quite noisy so an enclosure is the only way to minimise it.

I can get some rubber and i suppose i'll can make up a box and sound insulate it leaving a hole for air intake.

I'm slightly concerned that this will not do what you require. I have 2 similar compressors linked from the tanks to an external filter/regulator. Noise is not a problem for me as I live in a very rural location, but these things are loud if you don't take steps to deaden the noise as previously stated. More concerning to me is the duty cycle of the compressor, mine are not particularly great, I get away with it as I have 2 connected together, so when one gets a bit hot the other one takes over. Spraying and blasting are very air hungry, it would be disastrous to get half way through spraying a panel only for the duty cycle to kick in and you have to wait ten minutes for the unit to cool down to an operational temperature!!

Make a compressor yourself,now that I know how this thing of mine is put together I could make a better job with better parts ie a large propane tank,piston and cyclinder head of ebay(quite cheap for a secondhand 50cc or 100cc bore) and a brushless motor.

Hardest part is removing the excess gas in the tank and carefully removing the valve....once thats off its a case of filling it with water,drain and then fill again and left for 24 hours.
The valve hole with appropriate air valve is the air intake from the piston.

Other components one air pressure gauge,some piping and an outlet nozzle plus a pressure regulator switch.

This is the size I was thinkin.....
