Anyone recognise one of these?

Hoping someone can give it a model number/name.Thorite can't place it.Was wondering if I could maybe get a service kit.The only info on the label is?
Model:20SR900
Serial:N9935.
It gets up to around 80psi quickly but runs straight out of puff with a spraygun attached.It looks about out of oil and I have some coming tomorrow.If the oil doesnt cure it I made a mad Ebay purchase.

It does indeed look like one of the very old ones from before hydrovane started to make their own, look at the top picture on this page.

However I do not know if a service kit is available. I'm interested though as I am picking up sort of the same tomorrow.

It a Hydrovane 9.

Loosen the screw(one to two turns) that holds the Black plastic adjuster.
With the outlet valve closed turn the adjuster in and see if the pressure rises If you go to far a safety valve will open.
You should be able to get the gauge to 100psi.
Tighten the screw afterwards.

Thanks for that Gary.Would you be so kind as to let me know the functions of the other screws?The smaller metal one has what appears to be a dipstick on it.Is this the filler?Which is the water drain and what are the 2 small glass windows for?

Hope the 180 mile round trip was worth it ;-(.If its very low on oil will that drastically alter its performance?

From the black plastic adjuster.
Straight above is the oil filler plug, to the right of the filler is the dipstick.
The 2 glass windows allow you to see if the oil return valves are working.
There is no water drain there should be a slight spray of oil onto the glass when the machine is running and while it is venting down when it stops.

If the oil level is very low then it will affect the performance.
The air output will be low and it will run hot (normal temp should be about 65C above ambient).
Don't run it if it has a low oil level the bearings will be damaged if they run dry or overheat.

Well the oil arrived.Topped it up(less than a quarter of a pint took it to max on the dipstick.Had no effect at all.Still runs right out of puff.No oil splashing in the little windows so I removed both assemblies.Both sides were completely clogged up with a hard green/white deposit like limescale.Have cleaned the diaphragms,needle valves,filter.Before I put them all back in I ran it and apart from a couple of pathetic spits its not circulating oil in that area.I also noticed that on undoing the dipstick screw that area is pressurised??????Any tips on my next step in disassembly would be appreciated.Its looking as if the whole thing is probably stuffed with the same gunge.Maybe been stood unused for years?

If the little tank on the top is all that's storing air it may not be able to get enough pressure/stored air up before cutting out and then restarting :confused:

Could maybe do with taking it apart piece by piece and cleaning everything out...

By rights it probably only needs a bit of "tlc"...

Took off the housing on the top that the air outlet.The area inside was over an inch deep in this stuff(oxidised ali?),hoovered it out.Took apart the valve on the top of this and replaced an O ring and spring on a brass valve inside.Still the same,no sign of oil in the windows,instant run up to 100psi but instantly disappears with spraygun attached.As I said earlier I'm sure that the pressurisation of what I call the crankcase(main body with oil filler in it)seems wrong?????When I turn it off if I undo the dipstick or filler screw filthy brown oil under pressure spurts out.Don't really know what to try next?Can see no way of removing the big ali disk on the end(with pressure gauge in).

You wont see oil in the sight glasses.
There will only be a fine spray or the occasional droplet.

The whole machine is pressurised while the machine is running and for a few minutes after switching off(while the machine vents down). Hydrovanes use the air pressure to circulate the oil.
The top part of the machine (where the gauge is) is basically just a filter)
The problem is going to be in the lower part of the machine.
What is the air requirement of your spraygun?

Hi Gary.Its not the spraygun causing the problem.I have tried several inc an old Binks Bullows 222 gun that was always recommended for low output compressors.Its the same with the blowgun in fact any tool.Can you advise what to do next?

Most parts for these are no longer available for these machines.

Yes my Google searches were fruitless.In fact no-one could even recognise the serial number.Anyone after a nice quiet 2hp motor plus some very heavy scrap to weigh in ;-) ?

hydrovanes work with an cylinder which has paddle vanes which slide in an out in an off set or cam type housing
works in a similar manner to a rubber impeller pump.
the ones i have stripped are a lovely bit of engineering all pump bits are mirror ground.
if yours has been run low on oil then you may have damaged vanes due to overheating.
underload they are sticking or passing pressure.

hydrovane end uses full synthetic oil as i recall and it ain't cheap.

forgot to mention the top unit has a series of felt baffles/filters and ali rings which could also be ya problem if the rest of it is full of ali oxide and general gunk.
you would get pressure at the gauge end but no flow at the other.
looks very similar to 66 were you undo the plug on the top and withdraw the rod which then releases the endcap were the gauge is .
end cap will be tight as it will prob have a big o ring on it.
you can then extract all the felt baffles and ali spacers.
worth a strip down ya might be lucky.

I have just fired up the big brother off yours (a hydrovane 18pu, 3 phase, 4hp) which had been still for some years. I had completely the same symptoms. Very fast increase in pressure but very little air flow. However, I let it running full open for a while and it seemed to help a bit, although it does not provide at much air as i thougth.

Many thanks for all the tips.Have bought a gallon of the correct oil.Yes as you say it makes sense to take it to bits before writing it off completely.Is there any info out there as to the correct dismantling procedure?

i'd leave the bottom end till last as you seem to be making pressure.
looks like a flow issue.
ie dies off when ya use the tool.
out of intrest will an air tool work in very short bursts?
