Anyone tried a tent for blasting?

Has anyone tried one of these as a blasting container: https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cig1015-heavy-duty-instant-garage-gre/

It's £300. I'm thinking my car doesn't need a lot of blasting, only a dozen rusty areas at most, so I could do it myself in one of these and not pay £1000 for pro blasting plus all the transport issues of transporting around a body without a chassis. It just flexes all over the place and there's no firm places to lift the body without the chassis.

I tried using a small two man tent once to do my bull bars and the thing just ballooned and there was too much dust to see or do anything.

I don't want to dissapoint you, but I don't think she'll stay in long if you start blasting

and with one of those crappy masks that aren't air fed u will be gasping for air and breathing all the crap what air u do get just do it in the open using goggles and a face mask and borrow wifeys sweeping brush

If you accidentally catch the wall with the blast it won't last long, even "overspray" will cause damage. You'll need to factor in extraction too.

Take BS's advice, use crushed glass, cheap as chips by the tonne from Stacey Processing.

a few years ago I used a 6ft x 4ft temporary greenhouse, it worked but wasn't the nicest of jobs to do.

alot cheaper than a temporary garage, but I guess it depends on the the size of the item you're blasting

you'll also be able to buy poly tunnels for growing plants in the same size as the smaller temporary garages for less than £100 (but I dont think they will be high quality at those prices)

I was thinking on a tent type thing for the soda blasting the boat hull but as it is 20 foot long and i will now be doing the treads i am just going to see how it goes with no cover at all.

Be rough as hell without breathing gear in a tent as others have said.

Fair enough. But in that video it looked fine!

Last time I did outdoor blasting most of the media landed within a metre or two of the car so if I put a tarp out maybe I'll be able to catch and reuse half of the media?

Stacey's media is cheap..... if you buy a ton! Getting media in the South East is not easy, we have to buy at retail price in the few places that sell it.

I had a ton of crushed glass delivered and I don't remember the price being outrageous

Got it off eBay and it was delivered unbelievably quickly on a pallet.

it would do till u put one on and then u would soon know different I've blasted for years with an air fed helmet and the second the air is restricted u gasp for air and remove it fast put a paper bag over your head for a while and try it

Blasted half a mini shell in a tent the other year, got a 6 man frame tent out the local papers classifieds for 40 quid.
No body wants the big old heavy frame tents anymore, so lots of bargains out there.

years ago I blasted a car in the street using my mobile diesel comp and no one said jack sh...it. sprayed the car in open as well they were more interested to see it . the ground looked like redcar beach .dry blasted 2 of my houses as well

If you have a lathe you can make a tapered point glass crusher, save all your glass and throw it in.

This is my glass crusher, it was used in conjunction with a pair of rollers and a screening machine, all home made.

How much media did you use up to do it that way? I.e. total loss, no reusing of media.

You say so cheap, it's only cheap if you buy by the ton, that's a £160 investment which works out £4 a bag. Not so cheap if you want 5 bags, then you're paying £16 a bag.

^^ Most of that is the packing & delivery costs. Find somewhere local, pay cash & collect should get you a better price.


I've even scrounged media of guys blasting buildings, offer to sweep up the used media and take it away - they'll think all their Christmasses have come at once. On two occasions they even gave me some bags of new media.

You will off course have to sieve the spent media.

Not surprised !! the vision of you in blasting kit with a gun in your hands was probably enough for most.

Good morning gents.
Glass is cheap, dusty and slower than garnet. It is up to the individual to what works for them. I only use garnet and or walnut husk (wallnut husk for cleaning or for antifoul removal from boats). In the newer cabinet I use plastic abrasive and that works really well for the removal of paint from paint equipment in for repair. It also has the advantage of not marking the airless sprayers componentary during blast cleaning.
