it was tentatively put down to the fact i was wearing a high vis coat (reflection) but a few days later i had a oblong, mask window shaped patch of burns and peeling skin around my eyes, so to me, its a forgone conclusion.

many people have told me its impossible. but it happened.

I've heard accounts of Ebay and even stores selling counterfeit items that can be dangerous such as motorcycle clothing and engine parts so potentially someone could have manufactured an helmet with unsuitable materials, counterfeit lenses or the helmet could be a counterfeit, etc. Sadly, some people will go to any lengths to scam people out of a few quid and don't care how doing so impacts the public.

It's just another option that could result in arc eye even when using a helmet.

it was a impax helmet bought from screwfix.

Had very little dirt / grit on my eyes ether
Cold wet tea bags placed on the closed eye helps with the symptoms

In 40 odd years Ive only had arc eye once....and that was about 35 years in.....I was trying to photograph (video) an arc and basically got carried away with the filming and forgot the basics......it was awful, like a bucket of sand in both eyes and it lasted a few days.
They used to say to use 1% Adreneline eye drops but our local pharmacy didnt know what we were talking about

i got through the night (friday night no way was i bothering a&e on a friday night!) with a bottle of vodka. and as a non drinker, it still took a 1l bottle to kill the pain.

the next day i drove to a&e and the first thing they did was give me a local in eye drops.

ill tell you, the relief! agony to painless in less time than it takes to write this!

that and the codine i was given to kill the muscle pain over the next few days was just joyous.

side note, i broke my arm about 10 years ago rather badly amd after surgery was given rather a lot of morphine and codine tablets to be going home with.


now i understand why people take opiates recreationally!

Probably depends on the helmet....I'm pretty sure when I bought mine the spec basically said that the glass would restrict the UV to the extent that you couldn't get arc eye even if the shade was set wrong.

Might go and have a look to confirm...never had arc eye....never welded without a mask. I've had a few blasts where the shade didn't come on instantly but no ill effects which I put down to the coatings on the glass even without the shade.

had a bit of arc eye with them 3m silver shoulder stripes , reflects the light straight into the inside of the helmet , soon remedied by removing them .
i see you have had the full orange dye job
its a real chew that requires great restraint sitting in A+E at 3am on a saturday with a room full of mutants when your eyes are giving you gip
just wish they would, stfu, about there self imposed stupor

Old wives tale....my mum used to put tea bags on my eyes when I had an outbreak of styes when I was about 8

I have eye problems, dry eyes is among them; I also spend a lot of time in front of screens - less so than I used to, but still a lot. Now and then my eyes will forever feel hot and dry and no amount of my eye drops will sooth them... what I have found works well in this case is to purchase a couple of bags of buffalo mozzarella from the supermarket and press them into my eyes for a few minutes. It really helps with my symptoms and allows my eye drops to work better afterwards.

So I say whatever works for you; I also use heat pads but for quick relief when my eyes are strained the cold cheese, still in the packet works really well. The shape of it, allows me to press it into where I need the benefit and they stay cold for long enough, can even pop them back in the fridge to use again or throw in a salad :-)

a wet flannel would probably do the same job.........maybe not on a pizza or a salad though

Not in my experience, but I've had chronic dry eye for over 10 years; so not a typical case I suppose. A hot flannel on other occasions can work wonders to freshen up tired eyes though.

There is only one cure .......... time.
To sooth out some of the discomfort you need to encourage your tears to stay on your eyes to keep your eyes moist.
I’ve found the best way to do this is a soft tee shirt tied tightly around your head across your eyes forcing them shut. Tears build up behind your eyelids and keep your eyes moist and more importantly this does sooth the pain a bit and can help you get to sleep.
I also believe the tea bag, lettuce leaf, etc theory’s are old welders tails. When I’ve had it in the past (few years ago now) I tried just about everything to ease that scrutinising pain to no effect. The only thing that helped me through the night was the dry tee shirt tight around my head.

Arc eye is always when caught as flash as said in corner of eye,eye dsnt react to stop light fast enough and it’s fragile as in if close enough burns layer of refractive lense,not really burns ,it distabelises it and hurts like hell

As a sixteen yr old in shop yard ye had all fools tryin to do it to get pass out off work,yes they hurt there eyes staring at arc but no flash,your eye reacts straight on,it’s when gets you from side,I’ve only ever had proper one in over 35 yrs if welding
