Arc welding a filled water drum

be wary welding on anything filled with water if sealed !
you will have invented a steam powered hand grenade ,a spiky one at that

Wont the water will turn to steam locally and blow the weld pool out if you were to get to full penitration, which you will on 0.9 and an arc welder

I have a similar thing for towing behind the mower, but instead of a drum it has a spindle with lots of freely rotating spiked blades and a full width tray on top for loading up with bricks.

Don't fill it with water, seal it and then weld it. If it's sealed and you start welding it, pressure will start to build up very quickly inside it

Exactly what I thought
Already happened that people did weld on fuel/water/oil/gas tanks/reservoirs and the thing blown up like a bomb killing who was working on it
I'd prefer to find gas bottle , remove the valve fill it with water , pour it ,use steam to
Clean it inside prior welding on it

For some reason, the gas smell lingers for ages - maybe your idea re steam is the answer.

Mr @fizzle its worth noting there is a clearing comb for the spikes to run through in the last picture, without one you will be towing a ball of mud/sods around.

Steam is used to clean fuel tanks prior welding or brazing them

Thanks for pictures. Im guessing those blades were cut with a plasma cutter. I ended up going for 5mm plate and have burnt through my good metal blade after only 5 or 6 cuts. I swapped out for a regular cutting disc which is jamming in the steel. What seemed like an easy job is turning into a nightmare.

They look like they are spring loaded but I get your drift. Dirt will build up around spikes like a pair of football boots.

The smell of gas is the smell of the smelly stuff they put into gas so that people can smell it.

The gas is actually odour less and undergoes an odourisation process so we can smell if it is leaking, it is the stuff that they put in it that lingers long after the gas has been washed out of the cylinder.

Hi All,

Sorry I meant to post back sooner. I managed to get the drum sorted and only blew thru the drum once which I managed to patch up with a bit of plate. My welding is slowly getting better with practice. I ran the welder on about 75 amp with 6013 rods. I even added some wheels which can be removed and used for other purposes. I might knock up a small garden trailer for my next project. Anyhow thanks for all the advice and tips.

I was more worried about the spikes snapping off on the tight corners but you are right it does tend to tear the ground if you take a sharp corner. My first attempt was using plasterboard metal anchors (mushroom plugs) and half of them snapped off on corners. My mate welded them on with his mig at the time.

The ground there in the picture doesnt look too bad but move further down the garden and the moss takes over.

Ha, you lot across at the East coast have no idea - all lawns turn to moss here eventually, unless you really rip into it often - it's the long dry west coast simmers you know!
