I bought myself an auto darkening hood last year for €130 one of the best things I have ever bought my 16-year-old cousin who is learning to weld keeps taking it on me if you can afford it it is a must especially for the beginner

It is a serious shame the in the Uk we are mostly stuck having to learn with 6013's on AC buzzboxes. I'm now using fleets 5p+ cellulosic for tacking and short run positional work where i don't need the strength of the lo/hi's, and it is 100 times easier. I know now why a lot of the Lincoln literature will spec folk to use either 6010 (if they have dc) or 6011 (ac cellulosic) for basic weld repairs. Just as strong as 6013 and so much easier to run. It's practically impossible to get a weld wrong with these rods.

I find its easiest to strike the rod on the earth clamp. Once you've struck the rod there a couple of times it becomes rough and its easier to start new rods. I just strike it against there to get the flux off the end, then go to where I am welding.

2.5mm rods work fine with about 60-90 amps. For learning I like to get some really heavy plate and high amps. That way you can concentrate on getting the technique down, without worrying about burning a hole. When you've got a nice bead get some thin sheet and you can spent many infuriating hours trying not to burn holes.

That's not cheap
Most welding suppliers will sell branded 2.5's for a tenner a box - all in - to the public

wow but im in N wales and there aint any welding shops for milles the closest one is in anglesee to far for me just have to stick to the online ones or do u know any websites the do them that cheep thanks

Ah yes, postage tends to kill any discounts. I have bought them off weldequip before, but to take advantage you need to be ordering minimum 300 quids worth to get free delivery direct from the manufacturer.
