Are hydrovanes really much quieter?

Your ears do sort of adjust to a constant noise though.
I'd rather listen to it running all day that constantly turning off and on

Maybe a stupid question, but can you not feed a mask with a vacuum cleaner that has a connection on the outlet? I seem to remember seeing my father do this a long time ago?

If someone chooses to do it for themselves they may need to filter the dust from the motor brushes depending on the vacuum cleaner.

It's basically a powered respirator, PAPR, with a remote blower unit, I doubt anyone here would recommend it, myself included even though this has always been my only setup.

My tiny little oiless compressor runs my airfed, I need to put a tank on it and hey presto, airfed on a 5A supply.
Yes I know diy safety is frowned upon, but I was servicing SiebeGorman ba sets 30 years ago so nothing new for me.

Bad idea to use a vacuum cleaner as any leak around the mask would pull nasty stuff in. With positive pressure it just leaks air out.

The output of the vacuum cleaner is used, makes it positive air pressure feed.

Great in the workshop for running a little gravity gun, inflating tyres, blow gun etc.

Yes, but not as quiet as they'd have you believe. I'd compare it to a washing machine at full spin but slower.

all the biguns ive wired up make a loudish whining noise about .25 hp

An idea I’m toying with is using a scuba diving regulator and breathe through that, but there are probably some pitfalls with this that I haven’t thought of yet.

Here's a parallel.

Think of a big diesel three phase generator, then think of a super silenced one.

They both make noise, but one considerably less than the other.

I have thought about a snorkel mask with piped air from 4 or 5 inch pipe over head to a flexible pipe to the snorkel via a high volume in line kitchen/bathroom fan. This would be positive pressure and high volume. The air could be brought in from a long way from the painting area and could be filtered too. The masks I looked at let fresh air down the centre of the snorkel and exhaled air out of the outer of the snorkel, a pipe within a pipe if you like.
I read about a similar system years ago on a hot rod forum using a car blower motor.
I gave up on the idea, concluding I could protect myself but not my family or neighbours

If it's out of your sight someone could break wind into the intake, I think there was an episode of Family Guy that did similar.

No,
Correct filtering not necessarily available, also if the filters become saturated they could expose you more than not as they are shifting a fair amount of air.

they're pretty quiet, I've had a couple of "is that it running?" questions from people used to noisy compressors

I think if you put it in some kind of enclosure it would be really quite

the problem is when they're good they're really good.... but when they start to go wrong they're total pita

Yes, many times.

I don’t know if the diaphragm in the second stage will let air past it and also how would you tell if the diaphragm had developed a rupture etc, but @Sergei Slovenija ‘s idea of firefighter device probably has that sorted (though availability is probably low)

You can get air fed tubes for 3m 6000 series half masks.

Quite expensive for a bit of rubber, however they are positive pressure and the half masks use far less air than the visor type masks because the seal is better.

They use the same fittings so you can use the same filters and belt.
I've both types, the visor gets little use, the half mask gets used a lot for painting and grit blasting.
Goggles are no problem either because they don't mist up.
