Are old gas pipes into houses cut off from the mains?

I think a self connected free gas supply there might have been in order

i have 2 supply in to my house and one capped off sticking out of the floor. i never thought of tapping off it it would save turning the gas meter round if u did such a thing . took the cap off and it was dead so unscrewed the pipe sticking out of the floor and slung it

I know someone who found a pipe like this behind their kitchen units when replacing the kitchen. And have had free heating for over 15 year's.

Father in law worked in a wood machinist yard. It had big gas heaters in the roof. They had never had a gas bill in 20 years. One day there was a fault next door and the gas board had to come into the yard. Turns out the two yards were once one unit, got split but the gas was never separated. They’d been using Nextdoor’s gas all that time! Impossible to put a price on what had been used as it was summer and the guvnor said he never used the heaters.

There was an great old guy down River Road in Barking that had a big workshop with loads of old machinery in it. He had a 2” pipe coming straight out of the wall about 3’ long that had a ball valve on it and was connected straight to mains gas. He just opened the tap and lit the end and had a 2ft flame as his workshop heating!

When I was a teenager, there was the remains of a gas lamp not far away. I climbed it one day to find the on off tap still there, being young & foolish I opened the tap found it still connected to the gas so lit it & got a nice long flame out! The lamp is still there, but must have been long disconnected now with all the mains being changed to plastic.

They still have gas lamps in Green Park and around the Palace. They bive off a lovely light!

I have the same sort of thing as the OP in the understairs cupboard. Its a massive pain as its in the middle of the floor and completely ruins the ability to put a large box in there. I'm not touching it though as knowing my luck it would be live anyway!

The last time I removed a load of old gas pipe ( 100% knew it wasn't live) it yielded about 20 mtrs of lovely thick walled steel tubing which i very happily took home, it has been extremely handy for odd jobs requiring a bit of sturdy pipe..

I remember when I rewired the lights in my 1st property - 1st floor maisonette, built 1910 - the gas lighting pipework was still in place, but dead. Mid 1980's removed it a few years later when I put a trap in an accessible place, not over the bath at the back.

My old workshop had a 6" + gas main (ex bakery) and that had various test points, gives me a warm feeling just thinking about it
