attatching yourself to a roof

Any time I am on a roof I throw a long rope over the roof and tie it to a tree or something equally strong. Then tie it round my waist so if I do slip I won't go over the edge. I guess this only works as I am working on one side of the roof only though. I suppose You could loop a rope around the chimney breast and tie it to yourself.

PS After plumbers mates, Leccy's are the lowest form of human life.

That must be one helluva long rope? anyway you could always take it through the nearest bedroom window and tie it to the bed if you can't find a tree.

Don't forget the story of the guy that did just that, threw rope over and tied to tow hitch on his car, wife came out started car to go shopping and dragged him up and over the roof... urban legend perhaps ?

My brother-in-law (ex-builder) fell off his scaffolding while building a dormer extension, ended up in intensive care with a bleed on the brain, broke his arm plus ended up with MRSA just for good measure, he's never been quite right ever since.... So be careful !!!

Nah, I served my time as a sparky a long time ago and just couldn't help myself.

Any hardware shop will sell a 30m rope for around a tenner.

I've tied the rope to the car tow bar too but had enough sense to hide the keys from her indoors.

if you are tying yourself to a rope you need a proper work harness, (even a rock climbing harness would be OK for diy) otherwise you are just putting yourself at further risk... even if you know how to tie a sit harness in a rope, you are still going to hurt in a fall.

so u went on a one week wonder course and u can officialy now change electric meters i bet that doesnt exactly over tax your strength its one step up from working at b and q

True but I'd rather hurt myself a bit with a rope than a lot with a 30 foot fall.
Although I really should buy a harness before I go up again.

Years ago I went on a "working at hights " training day ... I was asked to bring my safety kit so the guy who was doing giving the talk could advise me about stuff...
Anyway there was few blokes there mostly ariel riggers for mobile phone companies ,their kit was the same as mine ,sit in climbing harness ,various thethers ,toolbags ,caribinas ... but theirs was totaly spot less whereas mine was all paint and cement stained... I think they were horrifide!!! well you can't dump stuff cos' it's a bit grubby , can you ?...jeff

We had an insurance inspector that failed a safety harness because the owner had written his initials on it with permanent marker, said it affected the fabric?

Where I work now must waste £000's as we are all issued with harness, fall arrestor, lanyard etc. and they are checked every 6 months. A couple of weeks ago they failed 4 harnesses on age so I had to destroy them, 2 had never been used!.

Yeah I've seen that happen it's crazy and it's to cover themselves.It's the paranoia of litigation so logic and common sense flies out the window ... jeff...

Fails totaly fails IMHO ...destroying perfectly good gear,just puts costs up, hightens the fear, make a laughingstock of health and safety rules and regs ....

Yep, it's a pain really. My harness is way out of date technically, but I can't justify the expense in replacing it. Besides, it only gets used a couple of times a year! Ditto with the ropes. All taken good care of and kept dry they will last a long time. But having the gear is only half the problem, you also need to know how to rescue yourself too!

A window cleaner friend of ours fell off a bay window last week and fractured his skull in two places, broke shoulder blade and pulled ligaments. I used to fit TV aerials at weekend with an aerial fitter and on a slate roof I would not step off the crawler unless I was behind a stack and on a Marley tiled roof not every layer is nailed so don't trust them too much either.

6 houses down from just been watching two blokes re doing ridge tiles and pointing a chimney on Marley type roof
just a normal ladder to get up to the roof
no roof ladders no safety gear no nothing they removed every other set of tiles going up the roof to use as steps
i bet they were not English

fine if the pitch is fairly low... just not good practice these days
