Audi sump repair

i've bought in new 1.8 T and 1.9 TDI sumps for £25 before, usually they get welded because need it NOW or the new one that turned up was wrong for whatever reason.

Different yes but far from impossible. I’ve welded hundreds of these things. All different in the way they behave. Some have flowed beautifully some have been a fight from start to finish.
Zinc, lead, copper and loads of other rubbish go into these things to make them a pita to weld. I’ve always done them with tig. It’s good for locally burning out any crap in the casting.

Hi, Is that because of using scrap castings in the pot which bring in other elements from things like say, alloy wheels? I suppose because it's not a safety or structural item any old scrap will do.

Tell him to stop straddling them, better to drive one wheel over the top. Straddling, I've read, can be bad for tyre walls too.

Engine raisers are the way forward,

Alloy sumps can be had for less than £30 now. And euro usually keep the vw ones on the shelf.

non structural, like manifolds ect they call it amalgum i think its anything thats not presious or magnetic gets wanged in pot and melted what pours out gets poured in the moulds whatever it is

Yep I know i was stating the obvious a bit but was just informing people that usually there kept on the shelf now as it is that common.
They even made some with a steel lower panel to try and prevent it happening.

I’ve never had a sump weld bad. Certainly not off a modern car.

They all weld like cast aluminium, of which there are many varying degrees of quality.

Not like magnesium cast parts which do contain a good percentage of zinc.

@zeppelin builder aluminium is porous anyway so maybe it was just Oil you was pulling out rather than zinc.

zinc is the main culprit its added to die castings to make them flow into the dies
its bad enough welding galv on steel so
aluminium with say 25 percent zinc is most entertaining to weld.

You can't weld Aluminium with 25% zinc. It's basically a 7000 series. Braze yes.

The zinc will just boil off.

Like I say never had a casting of an engine or gearbox so bad it could not be fixed in some way.
I use a preheating plate to cook any oil or impurities out. I use a Karcher steam pressure washer a lot along with a strong degreaser.

never had a problem with sand castings
heads manifolds etc have oxy acetylene
welded the ones that tig wouldnt look at
for instance 1913 albion radiator header tank

a friend that had a machine shop used to do all his castings with mig cracked heads valve seat areas as it wasnt so sensitive at boiling up any contaminants

no i can tell the difference with oil contamination and ferocity i mean porosity

would love to know what that lad milford uses to weld his one off specials with
v12 kawasaki etc i. sure i read he used good old oxy acetylene
