I fitted a 15 quid Peugeot 106 boot gas spring (300mm travel) to my mini mill and threw away the original sprung assembly.
More consistent - and I wanted the room to mount the scale for a DRO.Interesting. Any particular reason? The spring assembly has always seemed to work okay on mine.

Lovely, smooth action now - with a damped section at the top of the travel. A lot cheaper than buying an industrial gas spring.
