Basic guide to workshop safety - Comments

Some months ago Malcolm asked me to write a” Sticky” basic guide to workshop safety. But we've had some health problems - Mrs jugs with new hip + heart attack + triple bypass, (all ok now) slowed things down so at long last, ere-tis.

As it's such a big subject I’ve tried to keep it as concise as possible while still being readable, so it is very basic.

love the comment about not wearing gloves when drilling, I have seen the evidence of what it can do. Broken arm, lad got gloves caught in drill sucked is hand in and broke his arm

I won't link to it on here and I hope no-one else does but there's a horrific post on another site about a machinist who gets pulled into a big lathe when his loose clothes gets caught. It's just unbelievable carnage .

would consider adding a bit about not using workshop / tools when tired, ill, under the influence of drugs (prescribed or otherwise!) or alcohol.

This coment made me laugh

Why do people do stupid things like that? I have a nice scar around one of my fingers where I absently mindedly saw myself poking it down the end of a tube I had recently cut off, whilst thinking 'why am I doing that' Bloody hurt while pulling said finger out of the end of the pipe.

I would like that link (with suitable warning notice) + some pictures of cuts, burns etc in the links page as most people cant imagine a bad injury until its to late.
I've been saved from death/injury on several occasions by remembering images like that shown as part of my apprenticeship from 40+yrs ago.

If a picture like that saves one injury at least he wont have died in vain,

I've just had a look at your new Safety sticky, and I must say thanks for the terrific amount of effort that you've put in. I can't claim to have read it all, or followed all the links; but what I have read / linked to has been very informative and interesting. I have one query so far:
"Never aim compressed air on to the skin. (It can enter the blood stream giving you an embolism leading to death).
Use safety blowdown guns."
What's a safety blowdown gun please? Would it be possible to add a link?
I remember from my apprenticeship, many years ago, being warned of the dangers of aiming compressed air onto skin but a safety blowdown gun??

Aaargh. I used to rest the palm of my hand on the spinning lathe chuck because I liked the noise as it went over the keyhole! I feel ill at the very thought now I remember it!

My blow-gun has those relief ports. At work the bench has a separate low-pressure line for blow-down guns that not only prevents firing air into the bloodstream but also prevents firing crap onto clean parts of the bench. I'm going to install one here on my lathe.

Also good call on the gloved hand thing. A guy I was working with was crawling along 'commando-style' in a tight space with a hilti drill in his hand with one hand on the bit. He had the drill plugged in and hit the trigger by mistake. His glove got caught on the bit and it popped three of his knuckles out of the sockets.

The hacksaw one`s new to me allways taught to cut on the right side of vice if your right handed stop you punching vice if the blade broke, I`l have to try it the japanese pullsaw idea see if I can cut straight

Superb stuff ...
One stupid thing I did: used kitchen towel and thinners to wipe things, threw rags in the (lidless) bin. Few hours later, rags long forgotten, using the MIG, the rags ignited even though the bin wasn't that close by. Didn't notice while the helmet was on. Bin now has a lid and is removed while welding or grinding, unfortunately there's no easy fix for my struggling Mk1 Human Brain Cell.
