I'd like to add - there's not much on lifting equipment. You've got jacks and stuff, but plenty of DIYers use engine hoists and pulleys etc. Plenty of others here use cranes and hoists (although if they're in the business, they shouldn't need to come to this site to be told).

So it might be worth mentioning that lifting equipment should be rated for the job, and should be inspected before use. All very well using jacks, but if you're lifting a 1 tonne weight on a half tonne jack, with leaky seals, you're asking for trouble.

In work, PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations), apply - as links, i'd suggest.

Chemicals used in the workshop may be hazardous in different ways, such as inhalation, skin adsorption and ingestion. Read the label, and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS - available from your supplier of the manufacturer's website) if available, and follow the manufacturer's H&S advice. Wear PPE if necessary, and mop up any spills safely and immediately.

I did look at having more subjects in, but felt it would become to cumbersome, thus unreadable,

I think each of the following forums should have its own specific sticky safety tutorial :-

Welders and Welding Machines

SO- Are there 4 members (or more) with the practical knowledge on the subject willing to have a go at writing them.

That's a good piece of work. Well done. You put the hours in on that one. One thing that is important in the garage / home workshop where there is probably more flammable 'stuff', is not to turn off the equipment, turn off the lights and go to bed or go out. If you have been generating sparks through welding or grinding, switch off, then take a few minutes, have a brew, check with the lights off for a moment. My workshop is under our bedroom, makes me vigilant. I do a bit of proof reading, if you need anything done, give me a shout.

Poked it where i shouldn't have! into machinery that started up when it should have been locked out. chains and gears make quite a mess, It was a long time ago, and the nightmare's have long since faded, But. Any hand injurys make me sick even now 30 yrs later......

Trust a sparky to make a comment like that, there wasn't enough left to keep, I think it was incinerated with everything else.

I can still feel it some times, lost but not forgotten.

Keeps the grandchildren confused when i put the stump in my nose and go beep beep boo , then the wife splats me and says stop playing space invaders! kids don't know what we're on about....

No, it was and has been really useful and I'll be using some of it tomorrow to better operate angle grinder (not that I've been a complete NOOB) and I'll try my hacksaw blade backwards and I've been cutting with a hacksaw for a lot of years and don't mind saying that's new to me. I guess it's because no-one ever told me otherwise?

As far as injuries are concerned, DON'T pick up a live planer by cupping it in your hand!

Yes, it was bloody sore, almost passed out with the pain but that was after -
'Ouch'
Washing under a cold tap, letting the skin flap back and forth to get it clean.
Going up stairs to the bathroom, collecting the box of fibre plasters (on a roll) and the scissors.
Coming back down stairs and cutting 12 thin strips of plaster to butterfly the cuts together.

Then it HIT with extreme effect!

Surely you took yourself off to hospital to get it welded back together?
Bet you felt sick when you first saw what you had done.

I think one of the next problems is the scar tissue. I ripped a lump out of my finger moving some steel that had a snapped tack weld on it - slid through my hand and dug a big hole. Healed no problem, but has left a 'callus' at one end of the scar which can hurt if i pick something up heavy and it squashes it. Probably wants treating like a bad weld. Grinding out and re-doing

Pretty new here and I realise that this is a fairly long running thread, but I found it today and had a good read through. Well done, some excellent advice in there.

I can say that with confidence as I am a Chartered Safety Practitioner and a Fellow of IOSH with nearly 25 year's experience in the field. Much of which was in fettling, grinding and fabrication. So I can vouch for the content. Honestly, I would add very little. Perhaps only to say that where possible, get your family, neighbours etc to understand what you do and what they might have to do if it did go wrong. Simple things like your kids being able to dial 999 for example. I get my Missus to bring me regular cups of tea when I'm out there. That way, I'm not alone for too long. The tea's terrible, but I have a COSHH data sheet for it, so I know how to dispose of it correctly.

If I could maybe distill my top tips from it, they would be:

• Maintain good housekeeping - tidy as you go
• Wear PPE
• Keep kit in good order
• Use tools for their intended purpose - properly
• Recognise what 'unsafe' looks like and don't do it
• Know your limits, get advice before going further
• Nothing you do is worth losing body parts or worse

Once again, really well done.

I won't link to it on here and I hope no-one else does but there's a horrific post on another site about a machinist who gets pulled into a big lathe when his loose clothes gets caught. It's just unbelievable carnage .
