Basic linisher / belt grinder

For a year or two I've been using a wee belt sander/grinder with a 25mm belt and 125mm disc but I'm looking for something an upgrade without getting something too (a) large and (b) expensive.

This what I have - actually bought it from someone (sorry, can't recall who!) on here a couple of years ago and it has served me well but has been well used and needs a new starter switch, and I'm not really bothered about the disc:



Axminster do their 'Trade' metal linisher but is rather more than I'd like to consider spending but I do trust their 'Trade' kit and have some of it already.

Anything else out there that I'm overlooking? Should add that I'm after something I can easily lift onto an old B&D Workmate outside, as I never grind in the workshop.

I got one of these off the 'Bay for [iirc] £58 (despite having all the bits to build my own), it does the job fine. Heavy but if I'm using it on [say] a job needing a lot of attention from it, I do as you and take it outside.

for years, i used a PBS60 bosch belt sander as a linisher.
i've upgraded now to a makita 9403
(still held in the same vice)

Me too, I've a couple of belt sanders which get slung in a vice from time to time.

Must make something better one day.

i've also got one of these:



mine is nutool branded, and all cast iron (and 20-30 years old), but theyre still available under various brands - like the ubiquitous horizontal bandsaws.

tbf: i only really use it for sharpening pencils. :-D

They are super useful tools and size isn't always the problem with the smaller ones. The problem is they can be cheap and nasty. This is a great video by one of the most awesome YouTubers out there, sorting out a cheap and cheerful belt grinder to perfection.

Makes a decent job of the initial chisel sharpen.

Good for lathe tools too.

I've got one of those Clarke woodworkers and its been great, but the useful thing about a belt running free of a pattern is knife sharpening.
You can't really get the angle and a good swipe across the blade with that Clarke style, apart from its good.

theres a small 40mm-ish part of the belt which is unsupported by the platten on the clark linisher.
the pbs60 has a similar (smaller) gap.
not as good as a proper belt grinder - but they have a platten also?

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'd forgotten about good old Screwfix but it seems they're not selling their two Scheppach offerings, identical to that suggested by @bigegg , at the moment - else I'd be picking one up in the morning.

I've emailed SIP and their offering is due back in stock with them early February...

However just widened by perusing at Axminster and there's this which seems identical to them and only £130!

I bought a Clarke sander for fettling metal, but ironically I've used it more for wood than I have metal

I think it's this one I've got - Clarke CS48 Belt and Disc Sander - Machine Mart - Machine Mart
But it's been languishing behind the tractors for the past 6 months, since the workshop got rearranged to fit the new lathe in.

I'd love a proper 3 wheel linisher, as having that bit give in the belt can be handy for certain things. They're not that complex to build, and there are various plans around, if you fancy a project.

keep an eye for RJH in the usual places. Mines about 350 years old and built like a brick outhouse.....they come up every now and again with various descriptions as people who do not know what they are will list them as sanders?
