Try living near a steel works. Everything covered in abrasive red grit. A mate used silicone grease on spark plug leads - was arcing a treat! Lot better now but still a problem in port talbot.

It's a bodge.... but it works and cost next to nothing. Takes the strain off of the vacuum cleaner filters and removes the fines so that I don't think I've ever changed the media - just keep topping it up. But then, I don't do a lot with it.

I have always been impressed with how our DC01 Dyson still pulls really fine dust up and layers it in the chamber like an archeological dig. You could tell when the Mother-in-laws room had been done as there was a fine white line in the sediment!

I used to work at an ICI perspex plant and the time when someone tried to pump 24 tonnes of Methyl Methacrylate Monomer into a tank that only had 8 tonnes worth of space became legend (no it wasn't me). It popped the safety valve on the top of the tank and stopped the pump but in the process it did release a fine spray out of the top of the tank for a second or so. It's a REALLY good paint stripper and every car in the carpark looked like it had measles. The days when mobiles were the size of a housebrick and certainly didn't have cameras built in so no piccies unfortunately.
The guy responsible survived that incident but it wasn't many months before he did something similarly silly and was never seen again.
Meanwhile I've just made a Frankenstein's vacuum using the same type of cyclone that wristpin has shown and the guts of a Dyson to provide the vacuum. All seems good so-far and I've been using it to suck up the ash from the woodburner (been burning a lot of waste cardboard recently) which clogs the filter in the "ashcan vacuum" in minutes.

It would have been obvious if he'd been thrown in there - the stuff is almost totally clear so if you opened the hatch at the top you could shine a torch in (intrinsically safe torches we were issued with) and see the bottom. The tanks are about 4 storeys high.
