It is also a Metz that I am working from. Have a steering wheel to fit as well, but have been able to rely on someone else to turn the crank, which is helps.
Dont overlook the value of a decent screw clamp, which is otherwise a faff to operate on these things.
I cut up the handle. Retained the connecting part/boss bit and welded that directly to the wheel. I will get you a couple of pics later. It's not pretty but works fine. My excuse was I was put off by the smell of cooking manure coming from the old rubber covering the wheel spokes. Wasn't bothered about losing the handle as it is pretty rubbish.
Here we are. A couple of badly shot photos. There's a large nut acting as a spacer/connector between the wheel and the remains of the blue handle. You can see the nut outline a little better in the second picture. The nut might have been welded to the steering wheel before I bought it. I am definitely responsible for welding it to the remains of the handle though. It was a few years ago. It looks rough but it works. I had to wire brush it a bit to see what was actually going on.

Ah, thought so. At first I was thinking this
Peerless, nicely restored from V rough shell a couple of years ago, by a friend in Norfolk. But nose a bit different to the Gilbern.
