welding with a old oil cooler would be my choice but inverter wise even with a 32 amp plug the duty cycle of the machines running 190 amps flat would trip the internal thermal cut out. I've blown 13 amp fuses running lo highs 3.2s on my thermal arc 175 and I find older material especially steel very easy to weld so are you sure there not cast iron ?

Well I can assure you I do run the chinese inverter at 180 amps (on dial) with 5mm rods and weld one after the other until the anchor is done, well have a couple of breaks but still.

Definitely not cast iron, you are not going to weld cast iron with 6013 rods. The anchors are old Salmon net anchors, massive things, takes two to lift and that is without the fluke on them. The flukes I am putting on are 20mm thick and are a rounded equilateral triangle measuring about 700-800mm along the edge.

Yes they are in the sea for 5 months of the year then ashore the rest of the year.

Could well be. I like stick welding vertical up on heavy stuff so I am kind of happy I couldn't mig them
Sit on a fish box and get myself comfortable and I weld all day, have to stop every 4 or 5 rods to throw the rope for the dog as he is sitting patiently waiting

I prefer running v up with stick then mig I find it more comfortable and easier with settings

To be honest I have done very little mig welding steel (only use Mig for Alu) but the guy that came out to try with the flux core is a top notch welder that often gets flown out to the rigs to do difficult jobs so if he couldn't get it to work I would say it wasn't happening

agreed mate just weld with what process works best for u and project. I just use what ever I can get out at the time for my private work some times mig is easier but more of a pain to move about so ill use stick and vise versa

I actually don't care much for mig welding, use it on the heavier Alu and with the new inverter mig it is a bit more palatable as I don't have to haul 150Kg of welder round to a boat but I much prefer stick and tig.

agreed with u but people want speed I'm quite quick with stick but mig is lightning and time is money

I am fortunate in the work I do I can choose the method that suits me best, often the guys will actually want me to use the tig for welding the Alu rather than the mig just because it makes a tidier job even though it takes 4 or 5 times longer.

I recently bought an R-Tech MTS255S which has surpassed my expectations and I am really liking it for the Alu. I originally used the spool gun I have on the big Esab Mig , it is one of the TecArc SGS360 spool guns but I bought a SG250 from R-Tech as it allowed me to adjust the wire feed and read the display on the welder where the SGS360 altered the wire feed independent of the the welder.

The only thing I didn't like about the smaller spool gun was it had a straight neck so I made up an adapter and fitted the swan neck from the SGS360 gun and now I can rotate it to the angle that suits best
