@northwest sorry about the cut but thank you for reminding us all not to take chances with swarf.
I have also grabbed swarf with fingers before due to pure laziness/taking chances and I have got away with it without anything more serious than a light cut to the skin.
However, it is only a millisecond away from being a disaster.

The Post Script:
Yesterday morning I attended Withington Community Hospital at 8.00am sharp, then hung around for forty minutes :-(
Eventually they took me into the Day Case Unit and got me all ready for the procedure, there was some rather intense phone calling going on regarding my ICD (Internal Cardiovascular Defibrillator) and eventually I spoke with the consultant lady. It was worth cutting my finger just for the experience, she is one of the most beautiful people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, absolutely stunning. Anyhow the advice from the Heart Hospital was to delay the procedure (for another date and time) while they could send someone down to turn the device off then back on again afterwards, I suggested we just get on with it, beautiful lady agreed and off we went.
My suspicions were confirmed, I had partially severed the nerve and she sewed it back together with two micro stitches so it was all worthwhile after all, then she sewed my finger back together, she had had to open the wound up (and make it larger) to get at the real damage. What I can say about the whole experience is that by and large I experienced the NHS doing it's thing with care and speed and I met some lovely people along the way. My finger is bandaged up at the minute with a million miles of gauze so no pics but it is the smallest cut in the world, causing the maximum damage. I have an appointment next week with the Dressings Nurse but I will be surprised if it lasts the day out. The dressing that is, not the finger :-).

I hope it heals quickly for you. Having done similar a couple of times in different fashions it does make doing anything with the hand (or with 2 hands) very difficult for a while. The cut nerve will probably leave you with permannt pins & needles in the finger, mine does.
I used to work with a guy who crushed his middle finger under the edge of something heavy. It upset his nervous system so badly he has a magic box embedded in his chest that somehow re-sets his nervous system when it goes haywire and he hasn't worked since. All from a squashed finger.

@northwest all the best for a speedy recovery. I've got the (bloodied) teeshirt on the 'just moving this ribbon of stainless swarf out the way' on the lathe without using pliers idiocy.
There's a spiral 360 degree cut to the bone under that dressing put on at A & E.
As set up for me by A & E, two days later I was down at East Grinstead hospital where they operated and joined up the tendons -100% successful, and resewed the nerves -about 70% successful, now I have a combination of pins & needles and no feeling down one side of my finger - but after the huge & sudden violence of being pulled in and spat out from the chuck I thought I had lost the whole finger.
Way back when, as part of my apprentice training we were shown a gruesome and realistic looking safety film which showed people getting their feet crushed, cutting off hands with circular saws, getting scalped by drills etc. And after the film the instructor in those pre political correctness days said 'so, the basic rule is, if you wouldn't put your dick there, don't put your hand, foot or head there'. On this occasion I remembered this advice really clearly whilst sitting in A & E.
