Just took a snap, phone held against my specs and me looking straight ahead at my wildlife friendly garage

Perfect.

My rev cam sits where the rear view would have been. Spent so many years with a bulkhead I forget it's there most of the time.
Always irritates me when you see people with the satnav stuck right in there vision.

Ok first thing was to remove a small panel from the top of this part.

You could then access two torx screws.

That allowed it to be prised up at the back and then pulled off toward you.
I then put the knife in one side and pushed the head unit over and at the same time levered it out, went to the other side and did the same and out it came.

To get it fully out you have to remove two plugs from the top unit as they come through the top of the dash and only allow removal so far.
There are, I think, 10 clips which hold the bezel on, two on either side and 3 on top and 3 on bottom so there is no way the bezel will come off with the radio in place.

After all that effort I don't think there is a head unit that will fit directly so likely will just have to get used to this and if I need satnav (unlikely) then I will just have to use the phone.

Short 2 mins of front and rear cam footage as I left to head down to the workshop.
Seems to be quite decent.

A still from it showing the number plate easily read, I am doing approx 50 and the other car coming towards me at about the same speed, so pretty impressive.

I got the wire hooked up to the reverse light today.
The reverse camera works now and as can be seen automatically drops to a lower image when reverse is engaged and then goes back to normal view when you come out of reverse. The beep is not from the mirror/cam but rather the vans own reverse sensors.

The reverse markers are useful. Have you found out how well the Blind Spot detection and safe distance features work? Seems a lot of clever technology for a small price.

Not tried them, turned them off for the time being until I get a chance to mess with them.
In reality I am not even sure you would need the blind spot detection as any car overtaking you is visible almost up until the point that you see its bonnet alongside the driver.

Bit of an update.
I found radio from China and was going to get that but then found one from France. Exactly the same except more expensive but I reckoned post would be much quicker and also no import duty to pay. Well guess what the bleeding French one was sent direct from China Not had any duty to pay so far although I have had demands in the past that turn up months later so...

One thing I must do is apologies to @Parm and his pal, you can remove the surround when the radio is still installed. I didn't think there would be enough room and also didn't think it would unclip so easily but it does. Didn't have the rods for removing it that way anyway so I just used my previous method

Had to cut a couple of bits of plastic away to get the new radio in but apart from that it went well. All steering controls work and I can now use the phones hotspot etc.

The only issue is the vehicle info reads l/100km and km/h

Also the dash on the car now reads that way as well, so trip and speed for cruise control is km, km/h.

I have asked how to change things and am awaiting a reply, I suspect it may not be possible without an update of some sort, we will see what they say.
If I plug in the old radio it goes back to mile, mpg etc

No apology required my man. Most important thing is you got the job done. It looks good. I’d budget another £100 quid or so and upgrade the speakers too. Will make a world of difference

Nope, all I can find is a choice of different l and km options.

Can't find it, as said only options I can find is different ways of displaying l and km.

The Passat one I could change but so far not this.

Ann Yan is looking into it for me
