I'm assuming since I only get to peer through one half of the lens at a time, the larger the lens the better. I've been comparing my cheater lens to my prescription reading glasses. Although the cheater lens works very well, it seems as though my prescription reading glasses allow for an ever so slightly clearer view of the weld puddle. I have a pair of bifocals already, but being that the lenses are so rectangularly small in order to be stylish, I find myself peering through a very narrow section at the bottom of the lens; too narrow of a section for welding because if I move my head up or down the slightest amount, I'm no longer in focus of the weld puddle. Would giant eyeglass frames with giant lenses be the way to go for bifocals?

get yourself a separate pair of glasses that are fitted with single vision lenses with the correct prescription for arms length work
tilting your head to use the reading bit of bifocals or varifocals inside a standard welding mask just gets you a good view of the ceiling
Has the added advantage of not risk scratching your good specs whilst working

Go to Boots for cheap reading glasses The prescription will give you a start as to strength, if eyes vary side to side get 2 pairs and swap a lens.
Mine are close so not a problem, but friend has big variation & did that, great for welding
I use tri focal for day to day, have old RayBan aviator frames I get the lenses fitted to, a lot of discussion with optician as to placement of lenses.

Proper safety glasses might be worth considering as they tend to be larger
ex opticians tech ,,, get a pair of glasses for welding , if you need glasses for reading then you will need a separate pair for tig , you tend to tig weld closer than you read , mig you may get away with .
get decent frames with flexible hinges , and either the cheapest pair you can find , or a brand you can get sides for as spares , if you wear glasses daily then go for bi focals but aim for a d32 instead of a standard d28 , bigger area magnified , and set the height about two thirds up the frame , a larger metal square frame will tend to work better ,,,
trick is to speak to the optom and spend time getting what you actually need , not just what they want to sell you ,,, make sure you get a copy of your script and include your pd . then just order a spare pair off the interweb for humble money ,,,, and two important things ,,,
1 ,,, look after them , no face down on the bench ,,, you soon get the habit
2 ,,, wear them , they are no good in the box in the house , you have to wear them to get the good out of them.

ive had the flexiable spring hinge never again ( i would not advise them )
my advice stick to a normal hinge on your glasses
as already suggested get a stronger lense when your doing the welding work
as goes for frames i prefer metal frames the plastic frame never lasts and goes brittle and splits yeah even ive repaired it with araldite
ive had metal frames that last well over 8 years and mine have had some abuse from my children and me well i did teach them to defend themselves
I've been having the opposite problem. Having been pretty damned short-sighted since a kid... with age I've become both long & short-sighted - & wear varifocals as dailies, & single vision to correct the short-sighted aspect when mountain biking & often for driving.
Even with varifocals though, the part of the lens that corrects for "reading" - really only works for say book reading/ car instruments distances and maybe a foot closer. For close-up work I have to look over, under or remove my specs.
It's only recently I've worked out that actually I can see the weld pool & weld better if I remove my glasses altogether and just get my head close enough to the work - so my short-sightedness actually works for me.
I've heard of "Cheater" lenses buy never tried one (guessing the are like a "reading glasses" plate lens to fit onto the mask??) but my issue is I can see detail from 6" from my nose to maybe 18" or so distance - after that I need my varifocals.... but they don't seem to work well enough just at the distance where I need them! (I have new glasses on order after a checkup this week - very, very slight change in Prescription, but old specs are battered).
(Poor light is a big issue for detail at any distance even with corrected vision I.e. my varifocals - so the welding mask darkening the subject also makes me want to work pretty close to the workpiece to make it out).
Cruddy eyesight made worse by advancing age! It's a PITA!

not double sprung gimmicky crap , simple metal sprung hinges ,,, they will outlast non sprung sides ,,, in time they will snap , a decent frame and sides will be available , and off you go again.
most people wreck their own glasses taking them off with one hand from the same side all the time , if you must take your glasses off with one hand do it from the bridge and you wont stress the same hinge on the same side all the time.

the type im on about with the spring is the screw on hinge with spring loaded sides if the spring brakes you will be told you need to buy new glasses con
im sorry i disagree with you as a full time glasses wearer never by the bridge of the nose you cant grab them correctly there ( certainly not if there a single bridge across the nose sorry its bad advise )
if your going to take them off take off holding by both arms as close to the frame as possible
the metal frames will take the punishment of taking them off by one side and you can straighten them out rather well if they do bend due to them being knocked about punched in face or other bangs they do get from wearing them

I was thinking of this just today, a pair of dedicated readers that are focused about ten inches from my face, which is where I generally weld, rather than the 14-18" I read books and iPad at.
I've had a pair of sprung-side glasses that have taken heaps of abuse over the last 3+years of being worn every day in all kinds of conditions- & the frames are still perfect (lenses are scratched to hell).
If you have to work glasses thru the opening of a full-face motorcycle helmet, or under the straps of a cycling helmet, site helmets, faceshiekds & ear-defenders & such-like... then IMO (decent) sprung-side frames stand a better chance of surviving than conventional hinge Frames by far.
But... mine weren't cheap frames. Actually a Quicksilver Branded Frame, & whilst not "Buddy Holly" thick, they aren't flimsy thin either.
In fact I'm so impressed that my new specs will be in a virtually identical new Quicksilver Frame.

I wear my bifocals 18 hours a day, every day, riding my bike, or in the shed, and only change them every couple of years. I clean them several times a day, yet i've never broken a frame, hinge, or had a lens drop out. My arms have that springy thing so I can spread them out several inches, but I never really do.
When I take them off I hold around one lens frame, and always have to pull a funny face, as if opening my eyes wide helps that movement.
you will notice that I said , if you must take them off with one hand ... ive found spring sides outlast non sprung sides , but to each their own.
Most of my Monday morning work pre covid was straightening glasses that got bent after a trip to the pub , or folk falling asleep wearing glasses after being at the pub , probably did a couple of thousand pairs some you wouldnt believe ... but for work plastic just wont stand the straightening process more than a couple of times . Feel free to disagree , i certainly wont be offended.
if you can afford a spare pair of glasses for under helmet wear , a simple straight side works well ,,, a full face helmet holds glasses secure and not slipping the crook over the ear when you have straight sides is handy , I used to put a new script in old frames at a reduced price and straighten the sides for bikers ,,,, something to bare in mind
the wee screws can work loose from time to time ,,, no harm in checking them onc in a while ,,, if you do loose a screw dont waste time looking for it , I had boxes of them , usually a 1.3 or a retap and a 1.4mm gets you going .... I've not had a screw come loose in years, though there was one pair that I had to Loctite the screw on, a long time ago.
It amazes me that something so flimsy as spectacle frames don't fall apart, break, crack, spit lenses out etc far more often.
I have a funny shaped head, my eyes and ears aren't level, or anything else, result of a very violent beating I took in my early years, ..... my glasses always feel like they are on the skunt, so I'm always pulling and twisting them, bending arms etc to try and make them feel right. I'm very surprised they always survive so long.
