Best lighting for the workshop

Those LEDs may be worse than the current fluros you have. Thse are going to be appox a 40W lightbulb each in terms of light given out, but at a different colour, they will appear slightly bluer. It depends what your eyes adjust to.

You can get LED in different colours to match the std light bulbs we are used to or the pure white light. We should leave the whole W thing coz 3 and 4W seems pathetic until you turn them on, what we need to get our heads round is lumens

Indeed. There's a huge variety available so the ones I went for are 6500K, which is a brighter white, and 1620LM.

After much chopping and changing I found 4000K to be the perfect temperature to work by. Pain to find bulbs in that rating though!

I saw that on the listing but it also stated 500ish Lumens. For the rated power I suspect the 162olm may be a bit optimistic for that i'd expect about 20W

Actually... if you've seen my videos (most shot in the depths of winter) you'll see that it's not exactly bursting with light right now

I'm going to wire up the flood lamp I found this afternoon. There was a spare cable in the workshop when I moved in. That will go over the workbench. I'll let you all-knowing how I get on.

I have 4 small tube 5ft fluorescents in the main garage and 4 full size 8fts in the extension but two of them are currently out so I have been considering something cheaper to run. I bought an LED floodlight to try which is a 150w replacement and that is quite impressive but the power supply gives off RF and upsets the radio! A leisure battery and solar panel to run LED's is tempting but just don't have the time at the moment. Bought some of the self adhesive strip LED's a while back for a project that you can cut into section, quite impressed with those too.

I've just wired up a 500W flood lamp over the bench. The LUX has gone from 40 to 1300 measured at the bench.

Just remember to watch out for the strobe effect. we had the following job on the balancing machine in work and at certain speeds it looked stationary under the lights.

had to give the new lad a right good wallop when he went near it. Also seen the same thing with LED head torch's. a few times I have gone to start drilling or taking a weight off and glanced at the tacho and seen its spinning fast enough to take my arm off.

any proper machine shop used leading and lagging power factor flourescents fittings .that negated the strobe effect

I'm not too impressed with LED lights, I have had a huge number of failures with the bulbs and have swapped them all out for CFL or good old Halogens.

They seem attractive with the cost savings but with less than a 6 month lifespan there is no cost saving!

A twin fitting would stop this, and doesn't the phosphor give a sustain to the light?

u must be buying cheap crap ones .then from china with no warranty. i fit hundreds and out of that only had about 12 returned in over a year

That's your problem the then. Stick to known and trusted brands. I use Phillips at home to replace the MR16's no probs there.
